Mayor Gary Heninger, Town Manager Brian Martin, Clerk/Treasurer Felicia Eller, and members of the Fire/EMS and Police Departments were honored to represent the Town of Chilhowie this morning at Chilhowie High School’s student assembly to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.

Our community appreciates our CHS leadership who worked to ensure that the history of that tragic day is not forgotten and is passed down to our young Warriors.

Mr. Martin, as a veteran of the wars fought as a result of 9/11, often says that “you don’t have to be a veteran to be a Patriot”. Today’s school assembly proved that as Chilhowie’s educators, elected officials, first responders, and students came together to honor our history on Patriots Day!

Town Manager Brian Martin would like to thank the Chilhowie Public Works Department for an outstanding job as they undertake the final steps in a much needed infrastructure project.

Earlier this year, the Chilhowie Town Council authorized the staff to move forward with the project that has replaced the aging, and very leaky, section of our water system serving the Double D mobile home park. These lines were installed in the mid 1960s by a private developer before the area was even incorporated into the town limits.

Instead of contracting the job, Chilhowie’s Public Works Department tackled the job “in house” and work began in early July. At this point all of the main lines have been installed and the staff is completing the residential connections.

Public Works Director Tyler Keen says that this project will eliminate one of the most problematic areas of the town’s water system and greatly improve our water accountability. It also resulted in the installation of two new fire hydrants where there has previously been none, drastically improving safety for residents. Also, being able to complete this project with our own staff instead of a contractor resulted in a savings of well over $100,000.

This project is another example of how hard Chilhowie’s staff works to improve the lives of our residents and do our best to take care of our precious water supply, while also trying to be as responsible as possible with the funds paid by our tax paying citizens.

Earlier today, Mayor Gary Heninger and Town Manager Brian Martin were honored to visit Chilhowie Elementary School, Chilhowie Middle School, and Chilhowie High School to present checks to each of the three school's Principals. As part of this year's Town budget, the Chilhowie Town Council approved a donation of $2,000 for each of our Chilhowie schools. Chilhowie's elected officials and staff take great pride in our top-notch educators and wish each of our young Warriors a wonderful school year!

Chilhowie High School had bulbs in need of replacement at our football field.

Instead or renting expensive equipment or having to contract the job out, Chilhowie Fire/EMS Department jumped in to help earlier this week. All lights are now back in operation, right in time for Warrior football.

One branch of local government reaching out to help another, all to make our community a little stronger, a little better for our students and athletes, and to keep our facilities operating is just one of many examples of all that makes our Chilhowie community so special!

Banners will be displayed throughout Town in celebration of Veterans Day and returned to the customer at the conclusion of the display period. Future years may be renewed for an annual fee of $25.
