🌲✨ Celebrating 90 Years of Hungry Mother State Park! ✨🌲
Today marks a special milestone—90 years since Hungry Mother State Park officially opened on June 15, 1936 as one of Virginia’s original six state parks.
Built during the Great Depression by the Civilian Conservation Corps, this treasured park has welcomed generations of families to its lake, trails, and mountain views. Whether you’ve spent summers swimming at the beach, hiking to Molly’s K**b, or simply enjoying the peaceful beauty, Hungry Mother holds a place in so many hearts right here in Smyth County.
For 90 years, it’s been more than just a park—it’s been a backdrop for memories, traditions, and the natural beauty we’re so proud to call home.
💚 Here’s to 90 years of adventure, history, and community—and to many more to come!

During World War II, government regulations didn’t just limit driving—they also controlled where people could work.
At the Marion employment office, officials warned that farm laborers could not simply leave their jobs for other work. Before taking a different position, a worker had to get a statement of availability from a United States Employment office. Without it, they were allowed to work elsewhere for only a limited time.
These rules were part of strict manpower regulations designed to keep workers in essential jobs, especially farming—which was critical to feeding troops and supporting the war effort.
With many men leaving for military service or higher-paying factory jobs, farms faced serious labor shortages, and the government took steps to keep workers where they were most needed.

In 1943, during World War II, a federal ban on pleasure driving meant Smyth County residents could no longer take casual trips—cars were limited to essential travel to conserve fuel for the war effort.
That same June Representatives from ten counties met at the Martha Washington Inn as a response to an invitation from the Marion Chamber of Commerce to discuss the ban on pleasure driving as if applies to these counties and to formulate resolutions asking for the lifting of the ban in this area. Present from Smyth were Walter Jackson, Ralph Lincoln, G. T. Culbert, L. Preston Collins and Quincy Calhoun. More than 80 persons attended from Lee, Wise, Dickinson, Scott, Buchanan, Russell, Bland, Tazewell, Washington and Smyth. A round table discussion led to the drawing up of resolutions to be taken to Washington by a committee and presented to the OPA. The ban was ultimately lifted nationally on August 30, 1943, after widespread frustration and complaints across the country.
