Chicopee is a city located on the Connecticut River in Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the Springfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city is made up of several neighborhoods, the result of the city's origin as a collection of villages in the northern-most part of Springfield, which it seceded from in 1848. These villages are now represented by the ne

ighborhoods of Aldenville, Willimansett, Chicopee Center (Cabotville), Chicopee Falls, and Fairview. Although once defined by the predominant nationality of its immigrant occupants, historically largely Polish and French Canadian, these neighborhoods are now occupied by people of many cultures while still maintaining their historical, ethnic charm. The city has since filled in most of its open space resulting in a number of new neighborhoods. These neighborhoods include Chicomansett (often referred to as part of Willimansett, this area is located at the southern intersection of Meadow and Chicopee Streets northward to Meetinghouse Road), Ferry Lane (an offshoot of Chicomansett surrounding Ferry Lane), Sandy Hill (the area overlooking Chicopee Center, connecting Cabotville and Aldenville), and the geographically isolated Burnett Road neighborhood. Another neighborhood, Smith Highlands, has had some independent recognition. Roberts Pond is within the area. Smith Highlands once had its own elementary school, as did Willimansett. Chicopee is home to Westover Air Reserve Base, built in 1940. It has one of the largest runways on the east coast at 11,597 x 301 feet. Elms College is located in Chicopee. 💜 The World Needs More Purple Schools! 💜

Today, we are joined at Fairview Elementary to celebrate the Purple School movement—a program centered on kindness, creativity, inclusion, curiosity, and community.

This special community celebration is inspired by the messages of The World Needs More Purple Schools and The World Needs More Purple People, children's books by actress Kristen Bell and creative director Benjamin Hart. The books encourage children to embrace what makes them unique while finding common ground with others through kindness, understanding, and respect.
We are proud to share that Fairview Elementary School was the first school in Chicopee to participate in this special celebration.

Thanks, Superintendent Dr. Ware, for accepting the challenge. All Chicopee Public Schools will be participating in the Purple School initiative next year on March 31, 2027!

This celebration carries special meaning at Fairview Elementary as it honors the enduring legacy of Ann Marie Liswell—a beloved educator, vice principal, mentor, and advocate for children whose impact continues to be felt throughout the Fairview School community. Her dedication to supporting students, uplifting others, and fostering a welcoming environment reflects the very values that the Purple School movement seeks to inspire.

So, what does it mean to be a Purple Person?

💜 Step 1: Ask great questions
💜 Step 2: Laugh a lot
💜 Step 3: Use your voice
💜 Step 4: Work hard
💜 Step 5: Be yourself

These simple but powerful steps encourage students to embrace what makes them unique while building a stronger, kinder community for everyone.

As we look ahead to all Chicopee schools joining this initiative, we celebrate the lessons, leadership, and compassion that continue to inspire our students each day.

Fairview Elementary School gladly accepts gently used books for its library, where they are dedicated in memory of Ann Marie Liswell. Special thanks to her family for keeping her memory alive and for continuing to share her love of reading and dedication to the students. Their generosity ensures that her legacy lives on through the joy of learning and the countless young minds these books will inspire.

After all, the world needs more Purple People. 💜
