Chico State Organic Dairy

Chico State Organic Dairy Chico State Organic Dairy Students “learn by doing” as members of the Dairy Management Team or through directed-work experiences at our unit.

The CSU, Chico Organic Dairy Unit is used extensively in our academic curriculum and as an educational tool for students to learn about the industry. The Dairy Unit has been certified organic since 2006 - the University Farm transitioned a portion of the property for the purpose of developing a program in organic, pasture-based dairy production and management. This particular production paradigm w

as developed to bring a more sustainable dairy model into the curriculum, and also serves to expose our students to organic methodology. The unit is run by the Dairy Management Team (DMT), which includes roughly 10 student employees who are charged with the day-to-day operations of the unit, along side the dairy manager and faculty supervisor. Students are exposed to the latest in milk quality and handling, dairy cattle nutrition and health, breeding, record utilization, pasture management, equipment operation, and new technology. The herd consists of 85 crossbred jersey cows that are milked seasonally, providing optimal pasture during peak lactation.

We are incredibly grateful to have this new opportunity available for students, all while honoring the legacy of an amazing past producer who was a tremendous supporter of our organic dairy industry.

Applications are due September 1.

Please help us spread the word.

The Western Organic Dairy Producers Alliance (WODPA) is proud to announce the creation of the WODPA Legacy Scholarship, established to honor the dedication and vision of our past board members who have selflessly served the organic dairy industry. This scholarship aims to carry their impactful legacy forward by supporting the next generation of agricultural leaders. High school seniors and college and graduate students pursuing a career in agriculture—with a special preference given to those emphasizing organic agriculture and dairy—are encouraged to apply. https://wodpa.com/wodpa-legacy-scholarship

This year, the WODPA Legacy Scholarship is proudly dedicated to the memory of Tony Schilter, who passed away in March 2026.

Together with his wife, Sunny, Tony built Sun Ton Farms, first in Auburn, Washington, and later in Chehalis, where they transitioned to organic dairy farming in 2006. Throughout his life, Tony was more than a successful organic dairy producer—he was a strong family man, respected leader, a passionate advocate, and a trusted voice for farmers. His vision and unwavering commitment helped shape the future of organic dairy, not only in the West but across the country.

Tony generously served on numerous industry boards, including many years on the WODPA Board of Directors, where his leadership and dedication left a lasting mark on our organization. He never hesitated to share his perspective, ask the tough questions, or stand up for what he believed was right. His passion for strengthening organic dairy was evident in everything he did. One issue especially close to Tony's heart was the Origin of Livestock Rule. He tirelessly advocated for its adoption, speaking publicly on countless occasions about the positive impact it would have on creating a fair and sustainable future for organic dairy producers.

Tony's legacy extends far beyond the farm. It lives on in the strength of our industry, the work of WODPA, and the many farmers he inspired along the way. We are deeply grateful for his friendship, his leadership, and the countless contributions he made to organic agriculture. It is our honor to dedicate this year's WODPA Legacy Scholarship in his memory and celebrate a life devoted to serving others and advancing organic dairy.

Exciting day at the dairy yesterday!

Huge thanks to Jack from Nofence for spending time with us, teaching our team about the technology, and helping install the first two collars for a test run. We’ll be closely monitoring the cows to see how the system performs within our infrastructure and management style.

Through the next few years, Dr. Lima is planning to launch several research projects utilizing information from this phenomenal technology.

More to come!!
