Some of the many reasons we do not support endless increases in funding and new military weapons for Chico PD. We need to invest in solutions, not a “justice system” that is profoundly unjust.

Crime is up considerably in Chico, and is 44% higher than the statewide average. Yet every year, the City Council blithely approves additional hiring and massive pay increases for Chico PD, as well as the purchase of additional military equipment. All of this eats up more than 50% of the Chico budget.

The reality is, the conservative majority of the Chico City Council will blindly continue down this path despite the science pointing to the failure of the solution.

We need better leadership. We need leadership that demands better from Chico PD. We need a a Community Oversight Committee. We need to invest in solutions like mental health crisis specialist who can work with Chico PD to de-escalate situations.

If you want meaningful change, we need leadership change.

𝐈𝐭’𝐬 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥, 𝐈’𝐦 𝐑𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠!

I’m thrilled to announce my candidacy for Chico Unified School District Board of Trustees, Trustee Area 5!

Our schools are the heart of our community. I am running to ensure every student in Chico has access to a safe, high-quality education, while bringing transparency, collaborative leadership, and strong support for our educators and families to the board.

Visit my website at www.dalbyforcusd.com for more information about my candidacy and how to get involved, and stay tuned for updates.

I look forward to meeting neighbors across Area 5, listening to your priorities, and earning your vote. Let’s work together for the future of Chico’s kids!

We can think of some questions, how about you?

What solutions (actual solutions, not punitive actions) do they propose to the homelessness crisis?

Will you support instituting fines for property owners who have blighted/unoccupied properties, downtown and elsewhere?

What is your vision for revitalizing our downtown?

Are you able to speak to constituents respectfully?

Will you support a Citizens Oversight Committee for Chico PD?

Do people who make less money than you still deserve respect?

Do you believe that poor people should not have a say in local government?

Do you believe that the empty road between Chico and the entrance to the exclusive enclave where you live should be paved before streets with many homes?

Should one apologize to developers or corporations if constituents exercise their right to speak out about a project?

Are you able to read? If elected do you promise to read documents before you sign or vote on them?

This is what meaningful change looks like. We could do this with the old Kmart building if we had the political will to get it done.

Edit to add:

A number of comments have pointed out that building is privately owned, and they have refused to rent it out because they’re probably making more money using it as a tax write off.

We have long thought that the city Council should enact laws that begin fining property owners for long-term blighted/unoccupied properties, unless they can show that work is in progress and there is a clear timeline for remediating the issue.

It should be more expensive to leave a property unmaintained and unoccupied than to sell or rent it.

And yes, this should absolutely apply to downtown. And it could be accomplished with the right councilmembers in place.

Well, the left councilmembers.
