Many governments are still tracking thousands of low-cost assets that add little value to financial reporting while consuming valuable staff time. Our new Raise Your Cap Challenge encourages governments to take a fresh look at their capitalization thresholds and apply professional judgment to reduce unnecessary administrative work. Participating is easy.

1. Review your current capitalization threshold.
2. Use your analysis to evaluate whether a higher threshold makes sense.
3. Update your capitalization threshold.
4. Submit documentation showing your new threshold by January 31, 2027.

The Grand Prize: One approved entry will be selected at random to receive an all-expenses-paid trip to GFOA’s 2027 Annual Conference in New Orleans, including registration, hotel, airfare, and more. Learn more at https://www.gfoa.org/raise-your-cap-challenge.

Congratulations are in order for another new Certified Public Finance Officer! Matt Zook, finance director for the City of Oregon City, Oregon, started his CPFO journey to strengthen his professional knowledge and credentials after more than two decades in government finance. Although his journey began in 2010 and included several pauses for career and life commitments, he ultimately completed the program and found it provided a valuable framework for connecting the details of government finance to the bigger picture.

In the evolving world of cybersecurity, a host of new concerns and funding challenges are emerging. Artificial intelligence (AI) has given cybercriminals a powerful new tool—for example, the ability to make phone calls with voice impersonations of government leaders. But with these threats comes an expansion of state, local, and regional government collaboration. Learn more at https://www.gfoa.org/materials/gfr-0826-cyber.
