I am an ideal candidate to serve on the Walter Payton College Prep Local School Council (LSC). My extensive experience as an artist, a leader, and a committed parent aligns perfectly with the school's needs.
As an artist…
With almost 100 murals in Chicago Public Schools, I have over 25 years of working with students, teachers, principals, parents and community members to complete a common goal. It has been my goal to beautify schools and inspire and uplift students. As a CPS vendor, I have gained understanding of how school budgets work. I have seen first hand how outstanding principals act and respond in juxtaposition to how others react. As a teaching artist, I have created several curriculums that followed CPS standards. Knowledge such as this allows me to give creative insight on the school's academic plan.
As a leader…
I have been self-employed for over 25 years, leading more than 400 mural projects that successfully brought together diverse groups—including different age groups, cultures, special needs communities, politicians, and business owners—to collectively improve their neighborhoods. I am also the co-founder of The Still Searching Project NFP, where we use art to raise awareness about unrepresented missing women and children. This calling has led me to speak on various platforms and organize several events.
As a husband and father…
I have been happily married for almost 20 years and have 2 daughters at Walter Payton College Prep. They are great students and more importantly great people. We have really good communication. True, I always wanted to be a “Cool” dad, but creating structure, transparency, enforcing good habits and helping them build good character have been principles that I have stood on. I believe these sentiments echo in the hallways of a good school.
Conclusion:
With my diverse, creative, and knowledgeable background, I am a perfect fit for the WPCP LSC. My goal is to see our students and our school remain healthy and continue to thrive. I look forward to the opportunity to serve.
