Major construction project on Devon starting in a few weeks through Fall 2027
** Critical update regarding the total replacement of the Devon Avenue bridge over I-94. Construction Work to begin between May 26th and June 6th**
This is not a routine patch-job. The Devon Avenue Bridge over I-94 has reached a point where full replacement is essential for the safety of every motorist, cyclist, and pedestrian who uses this corridor. While we recognize the significant impact on your daily commute and lives, this investment is a non-negotiable step toward modernizing our aging infrastructure.
The scope of work is extensive, including a full deck replacement, lighting and traffic signal updates, and vital ADA accessibility upgrades.
The first stage, to begin between May 26th and June 6th, includes a temporary traffic signal installation at the Devon/Cicero intersection – temporary lane closures to work on those 4 corners, sidewalk construction on the north side of Devon between Le Mai and Longmeadow – creating a sidewalk where one did not exist, and staging traffic on I-94 (Edens) to be performed at nighttime with lane closures on I-94 – no impact on Devon.
The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternative routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.
Construction is aggressively scheduled to finish by the end of October 2027.
We understand that a project of this magnitude causes major disruption. The long-term safety of our community is our priority. We appreciate your patience as we build a safer Illinois.
This project is a cornerstone of the historic $33.2 billion Rebuild Illinois initiative—a massive, statewide effort to overhaul more than 7,000 miles of highway and over 8 million square feet of bridge deck.
