Twenty-five years ago today, the world changed.

Last night, the Consulate General of Canada in Chicago marked the 25th anniversary of September 11 by attending an extraordinary performance of Come From Away at the Marriott Theater in Lincolnshire.

The story is Canadian, but its message is universal: in the midst of unimaginable tragedy, people chose kindness. The small community of Gander, Newfoundland welcomed thousands of stranded passengers - strangers from around the world - showing what is possible when we look after one another in difficult times.

We were especially honoured to hear remarks from our new Consul General, Claire Kennedy, who spoke movingly about the enduring importance of kindness and human connection. Her words received a standing ovation - powerful reminder of the deep friendship between Canada and the United States, and of how our two countries come together in moments of hardship.

A heartfelt thank you to the incredibly talented cast and crew of the Marriott Theatre for bringing this remarkable story to life. And to everyone who joined us last night: thank you for remembering, reflecting and celebrating the humanity that connects us. 🇨🇦🇺🇸

Today we are delighted to announce the arrival of Claire Kennedy as our Consul General of Canada in Chicago.

A native of Toronto, Ontario, Ms. Kennedy practised tax law for over 25 years and is a seasoned corporate director. She was appointed to the Board of the Bank of Canada, Canada's central bank, in 2012 and served as its Lead Director from 2018-2025. Ms. Kennedy has an ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors and completed the Advanced Management Program at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.

As Consul General, Ms. Kennedy will continue to foster and strengthen the relationship between Canada and the United States while advocating for the best interests of Canadians in Illinois, Missouri, Wisconsin, and, northern Indiana.

Canadian trade negotiators left the U.S. last week after failing to clinch a trade deal that would stop President Donald Trump's new tariffs from taking effect.

Effective September 8, Canada will impose counter-tariffs of 15, 25, and 50 per cent on products drawn from those targeted by U.S. Section 338 and Section 232 tariffs, with the rate for each product matching the corresponding U.S. rate.

These counter tariffs will apply to products covering $27.6 billion in imports from the U.S. and will focus on sectors such as steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, electronics, and others that are most impacted by U.S. tariffs.

The Prime Minister outlined next steps to protect Canadian interests, including dollar for dollar counter-tariffs that will come into force the Tuesday after Labour Day, as well as additional measures to support Canadian workers and businesses impacted by U.S. tariffs.
