Stand in solidarity with Eastwood Tenants Union, and call the NEW NUMBER to tell City Habitat management that unnecessarily hiking up the rent in an organized building is retaliation according to the RLTO! As tenants and fellow Chicago renters, we support ETU's organizing to secure affordable rent and lease terms that are right for them! Tell City Habitat to accept the demands now!

Chicago Tenant's Movement, Metropolitian Tenant Organization and the West Estes Tenant's Union held a rally this week to tell their landlord, 36 management that they aren't leaving! West Estes demands 36 management stop trying to evict them and give the tenants better living conditions. Let's show our support for the West Estes Tenant Union!

“We’re seeing it a lot recently,” Ruiz said. “Landlords do things to make tenants’ life hell. The tenants get annoyed and they self-evict.”

The notices worked to clear about half the building.

The Estes tenants are seeking $5,000 per unit for relocation fees for people who choose to leave. They also want residents to have the option to get their old units back after renovations with their current rent rates in place.

So far, 36 Management has declined to meet or negotiate with the Estes neighbors, residents said.

The landlord of 1345 W. Estes Ave. has been given a stop work order by the city, records show. Tenants said they were forced to move out during the pandemic.

Back in June, Della, a tenant living in Englewood, reached out to CTM after her landlord broke into her apartment, threw her belongings into the alley, and illegally changed her locks. He threw away TVs, rugs, clothes—and also her late son’s ashes.

With CTM’s help, she was able to get back into her apartment, and afterwards we launched a campaign to get Della compensation for what she’s owed. Della organized her friends and family, and together with a group of CTM organizers we went to her landlord and delivered her demands.

When her landlord refused to negotiate, Della and CTM organizers began to canvass the landlord’s other properties across the south and west side to get tenants to stand together against landlord abuse and neglect. Now the movement’s grown—in early August, Della and tenants from buildings across the city had their first tenant association meeting. Although Della’s campaign continues, it’s no longer hers alone.

Through her fight, she’s led tenants across the city to start building the kind of powerful longterm organizations through which tenants can fight back and defend themselves.

~~~
En junio, Della, una inquilina que vive en Englewood, contacto CTM después que el propietario forzo la entrada al apartamento. El propietario arrojó sus pertenencias al callejón y cambió ilegalmente sus cerraduras. Tiró televisores, alfombras, ropa, y también las cenizas de su difunto hijo.
Con la ayuda de CTM, ella pudo volver a su apartamento, y después lanzamos una campaña para obtener la compensación de Della por lo que ella debe. Della organizó a sus amigos y familiares, y junto con un grupo de organizadores de CTM fuimos a su arrendador y le entregamos sus demandas.
Cuando su propietario se negó a negociar, los organizadores de Della y CTM comenzaron a ver las otras propiedades del propietario en el lado sur y oeste para conseguir que lxs inquilinxs se pararan juntos contra el abuso y el descuido de los propietarios. Ahora el movimiento ha crecido: A principios de agosto, Della y lxs inquilinxs de edificios de toda la ciudad tuvieron su primera reunión de asociación de inquilinos.
Aunque la campaña de Della continúa, ya no es suya sola. A través de su lucha, ha llevado a lxs inquilinxs de alradedor la ciudad a comenzar a construir el tipo de poderosas organizaciones a largo plazo a través de las cuales lxs inquilinxs pueden defenderse y defenderse.
Despite thousands at risk of eviction and COVID-19 cases surging, landlords can once again file for violent evictions in the midst of a global pandemic. As the moratorium begins to end, it's important to remember tenants still have rights! No matter what your landlord claims, a tenant NEVER needs to self evict! If your landlord is filing for eviction, you are legally entitled to stay in your home until the court sends the county sheriff to carry out an eviction. This process can take 3-8 months! DON'T SELF EVICT!
Aun con miles de personas en peligro de ser desalojados y con casos de COVID-19 surgiendo, los propietarios otra vez pueden solicitar el desalojo en medio de una pandemia global. Aunque empieza a acabarse el moratorio, es importante recordar que los inquilinos todavía tienen derechos! No importa lo que diga su propietario, un inquilino NUNCA tiene que auto-desalojarse! Si su propietario solicita su desalojo, tiene el derecho legal de quedarse en su casa hasta que la corte mande al sherif del condado para ejecutar el desalojamiento. Este proceso legal puede tardar 3-8 meses. NO SE AUTO DESALOJE!
