The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning until 7 p.m., Thursday, September 3. Heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees are possible.

Take steps to protect yourself from the extreme heat and sun by drinking plenty of water and wearing light, loose-fitting clothes.

There is also a chance for thunderstorms during the afternoon and into the evening. The National Weather Service says damaging and gusty winds are the primary hazard, although some of these storms could be severe.

We are closely monitoring the weather and will update you if any campus operations are affected.

Did you know the expression "the dog days of summer" dates back to the ancient Greeks and Romans?

It refers to the "dog star" Sirius, which the ancient Greeks and Romans noted typically appeared alongside the sun to mark the start of the hottest days of the year in July and August, where it felt too hot to do much of anything.

We are well into the dog days of summer here, and whatever you wind up doing on these hot summer days, we have the resources to help you stay safe if not necessarily cool: https://safety-security.uchicago.edu/safety-resources
