Consular Corps Visit | Obama Presidential Center

The Consulate General of Greece in Chicago participated in the pre-opening tour of the Obama Presidential Center, ahead of its official opening to the public on June 19.

The visit offered members of Chicago’s Consular Corps the opportunity to explore the new campus and learn more about its educational, cultural and civic mission for the city of Chicago and beyond.

📍 University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

A productive visit by the Consulate General of Greece in Chicago to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, one of the world’s leading research institutions.

We had the opportunity to meet with the Dean of The Grainger College of Engineering, Dr. Rashid Bashir, as well as faculty, researchers and university leaders to discuss innovation, advanced engineering, quantum technologies, entrepreneurship and sustainable transportation. These exchanges highlighted opportunities for collaboration between Greek academic and research institutions and the University of Illinois.

Our sincere thanks to Professor Petros Sofronis for organizing this visit and to all our hosts for their warm hospitality and insightful discussions.

At 96 years old, she walked into the Consulate with steady hands and a lifetime behind her, waiting to take the oath that would make her a citizen.

The eldest applicant for citizenship through naturalization isn’t just a record holder. She represents decades of resilience, years of building a life, contributing to a community, raising a family and holding onto the hope of formal belonging. Her journey didn’t follow a straight line and it didn’t need to.

And in her case, it carries the weight of almost a century of experience, of generations shaped and identities carried across borders.

Ms. Antonak reminds that it’s never too late to choose where you belong. 🇬🇷

What is the role of the Consulate General of Greece in Chicago?
Where did the Ancient Greek gods reside?

We spent the morning at Catherine Cook School in Chicago in a fruitful discussion about the role and responsibilities of the Consulate in the Midwest, along with a presentation of the Acropolis Museum kit, “The Twelve Olympian Gods,” to two fifth-grade classes.

A wonderful surprise: the students already knew so much about Ancient Greece, as well as about the Greek-American community of Chicago.

Their enthusiasm, curiosity and thoughtful answers made the experience truly rewarding!

Their homework now: visit Greektown in Chicago … and one day, Greece! 🇬🇷
