The Powhatan

The Powhatan The Powhatan is a 22-story luxury co-op apartment building on Lake Michigan adjacent to Burnham Park. Morgan.

The Powhatan or Powhatan Apartments is one of the most desirable residential high-rises on Chicago's South Side. The building hosts the only 24-hour elevator operators in Chicago. It is known for the high level of service and security to building residents. Since it and many of the neighboring high-rise apartment buildings are named for Native American tribes (such as the Algonquin, The Chippewa a

nd the Narragansett), the area has been given the tongue-in-cheek name "Indian Village". The Powhatan was designated a Chicago Landmark on January 12, 1993. The Powhatan is home to many University of Chicago professors, lawyers and investment bankers. In fact, two former University presidents are currently residents. The building was designed by architects Robert De Golyer and Charles L. Much of the Art Deco detailing is attributed to Morgan who was associated with Frank Lloyd Wright. The exterior of the luxury-apartment high rise reflects Eliel Saarinen's second place design for the Tribune Tower competition of 1922. The building's terra-cotta ornamental panels feature conventionalized scenes based upon Native American culture. The building has an elegant ballroom on the top floor, rooftop grilling and patio furniture with a great view of downtown, a swimming pool and an exercise room. There are two elevators which open directly into each apartment (no hallways). It is located approximately seven miles south of downtown Chicago right off Lake Shore Drive. Access the Powhatan from Lake Shore Drive using the Hyde Park Boulevard exit. Parking is provided as well as valet service each day after 4:30 pm.
