Annually, between September 11 and 17, the Armenian Church observes a five-day fast called the Fast of the Holy Cross, followed by the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The feast day falls on the Sunday nearest the 14th. During service, a ceremonial cross is garlanded with basil, a symbol of royalty, and carried by the clergy to the church's four corners. After service ends, parishioners customarily take home sprigs of sweet basil.

The Holy Cross is one of the Armenian people’s most essential symbols and images of national pride. As the first Christian nation, the Cross appears on the walls of churches and buildings, and on khachkars throughout the country and diaspora.

Learn more about this holiday and others from AGBU's free app, "Armenian Holidays & Traditions," in the Google Play Store.
