The Department of Public Safety was created to support the university's educational goals by advocating a secure environment in which to explore diverse social, cultural and academic ideas and to pursue knowledge. Unfortunately, as with many other universities around the city, Illinois Tech is not immune from crime and those seeking to commit criminal acts do not stop at the borders of our campuse
s. The responsibility of crime prevention does not rest solely with the Department of Public Safety. We need everybody's assistance in making Illinois Tech a safe and secure place where the community can go about its endeavors in a safe manner. YOU are the most important piece of the crime prevention plan. The success of it depends largely on you. That’s why we’re rolling out a new safety campaign to promote that public safety is a total community effort. Reporting suspicious activity, crimes and safety concerns when you see them is a force multiplier to public safety, as our officers cannot be everywhere at every time. Ensuring you are maintaining a complete awareness of your surroundings, keeping valuables out of sight and looking after each other helps prevent you and your fellow community members from becoming victims of crime. The safety and security of our campus is a team effort. As a department, we will continue to improve our safety and security program through advances in technology, training and resources. We will work in coordination with all university stakeholders to create an environment worthy of your educational investment. But please remember, YOUR contributions are imperative to our overall goal of a safe and secure Illinois Tech. Sincerely,
Andrew J. Yocum, CPP
Director, Department of Public Safety
