I had the honor of marching in the Chicago Labor Day Parade and what a day it was! The energy, the pride, and the community spirit on display reminded me exactly why Labor Day is more than just a holiday. It is a celebration of the workers who built this city, who keep it running, and who deserve to be seen, respected, and treated fairly for every hour of their labor.

On August 30, 1967, the U.S. Senate confirmed Thurgood Marshall as the first Black justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Before joining the Court, Marshall successfully argued many cases aimed at dismantling barriers to opportunity in this country, most know his work in Brown v. Board of Education, but that was only one of his many legal victories. Throughout his illustrious career, Justice Marshall used the law as an instrument for justice, equality and human dignity.

Justice Marshall’s historic confirmation broke a barrier, but his enduring legacy reminds us that progress requires courage—and that equal justice under law must be continuously defended.
