Film Review: A true 5-star tribute to a Radio Hall of Fame legend.

Heartfelt Tribute to "The Wild I-tralian" & Golden Age of Top 40

The documentary The Dick Biondi Story: The Voice That Rocked America, directed and produced by Pamela Enzweiler Pulice, is more than just a biography of a legendary disc jockey; it is a time machine that transports you back to when a transistor radio was your most prized possession. After watching this film multiple times, I am still struck by the incredible impact one "loudmouth" voice could have on an entire generation.

The Man Behind the Microphone

The film beautifully depicts Richard Orlando Biondi's journey from a young boy in Endicott, New York, who survived a near-fatal birth only to discover his true calling at a radio station at age eight. It doesn't shy away from his "son of anarchy" reputation—detailing how he was fired nearly 25 times during his career for standing up to management and protecting the integrity of his show for his listeners.

A True Pioneer

For music lovers, the highlights are the segments on Biondi's "firsts." He was the first DJ to play the Beatles in the United States on WLS-AM 89 (see Chicago's WLS Radio, History), nearly a year before their historic Ed Sullivan appearance. His willingness to champion R&B and black artists during a segregated era in the South shows a depth of character that goes far beyond being just a "rock star" DJ.

This is the best news! The legendary "Big 89" WLS Musicradio is back. Can't wait to tune in and turn it up!

“The Big 89” returns to "WLS Musicradio!"

This Saturday night, July 26th you can hear WLS Unwound: Personalities of the Musicradio Years. A plethora of air talent from those legendary days of Top 40 Radio will gather in their Chicago lakefront studios to talk about the glory days of when WLS was the Midwest powerhouse for hits and known as “The Rock of Chicago!”

Scheduled to appear are: Tommy Edwards, Chuck Knapp, Catherine Johns, Chuck Buell, Jim Kerr and others who may just happen to drop by. This exciting radio event is hosted by WLS historian Scott Childers, who literally wrote the book on this legendary radio station.

Art Vuolo (naturally) will be archiving the show on video, while Ted Gorden Smucker, Bill Shannon, Tim Larson and Kipper McGee make it all work in harmony.

This promises to be the fastest two hours on radio. So, post a sticky note and tell everyone you know to tune to WLS-AM 890 Saturday night at 10:00pm (CDT). Don’t forget that WLS is also available online, with no atmospheric static or inconsistent sky-wave fade at wlsam.com.
