Statistics show that only about one-third of women with STEM bachelor’s degrees work in occupations officially classified as STEM. But that doesn’t necessarily mean their STEM education has been left behind.

Women with engineering degrees often continue applying their engineering skills and ways of thinking across roles and industries that fall outside traditional definitions of the engineering workforce.

Federal research funding decisions can shape more than which projects receive support. They can also affect who has opportunities to participate in STEM and the future of the engineering workforce.

Proposed changes to federal grant rules from the White House Office of Management and Budget have raised concerns across the higher education and research communities, including questions about scientific peer review, political oversight of awards and support for programs that broaden participation in engineering.
