Another awesome run for Drive By Fooding in Chicago yesterday!!! Thanks to your generosity 20 more homeless people received one of each-- a high quality thick material tote bag, a new pair of cotton crew socks, a new pair of thermal socks, a new winter hat, new gloves, new pair of boxers, other donated winter clothes and coats, a food package containing an apple, banana, orange, kiwi, bottle of water, an apple pie fruit and nut bar, a ham and turkey sandwich, on hearty bread with power greens, toothbrush, toothpaste, a medical face mask, and the reminder that there are still people who care about them. In addition to that I also popped open my trunk full of clothes, and coats, and passed them out to around ten other people. We've done this for well over a thousand different people in Chicago, Kansas City, Baltimore, Las Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, San Francisco, and Denver!!! For this run, I got some help from family putting all the bags together, and went on the run solo this time. I drove to some new places, following the highway, and finding people underneath, doing their best to survive. I also went to Lower Wacker Dr., and talked with some people living in tents, or only in sleeping bags, or on blankets on cold concrete. Cars were flying by, some speeding at least 30+ mph over the speed limit, only a few feet from where they were sleeping. Imagine trying to sleep like that every night for an extended amount of time. I believe this is part of the reason many homeless people have mental illnesses. Not getting good sleep for extended periods of time is enough to affect mental and physical health by itself, and when you add poor nutrition to the mix, it's no wonder why many of these warriors are in poor overall health. I also saw what amounted to hundreds of thousands of taxpayer dollars used on fencing, (which means throughout the entire city the cost is probably in the millions) in an effort by the city to keep homeless people out of certain areas underneath overpasses, and in areas no one besides homeless people frequent. This is one example of the inept government wasting resources on unnecessary things instead of putting them towards programs that help these people. It's a complete waste because despite city efforts to keep people out of those areas, people find a way around the fences, or cut them to get some shelter from the elements. This is why we do this work. When the government fails to do their job, it's up to the citizens to do their part to better the communities we all live in, work/play in, and love to visit. We will continue doing these runs, as we shift our focus to our next phase of operations. In this upcoming phase we will be helping people completely turn their lives around, one step at a time.
