Dear Neighbors,

I want to begin by acknowledging the tragic events at Swedish Hospital this past weekend. Officer John Bartholomew lost his life in the line of duty, and another officer is still fighting for his life. My thoughts are with Officer Bartholomew’s loved ones, the entire Chicago Police Department, and all of our first responders who put their lives at risk to protect our city every day.

Here in the 44th Ward, Wrigley Field will make history this weekend by hosting the first Chicago HBCU Baseball Classic on Saturday, May 2 at 7:00pm between Alabama A&M and Prairie View A&M. Northwestern baseball will also be playing at the Friendly Confines this weekend against Indiana. Both of these special Wrigley Field events will follow 1:20pm Cubs games, creating two doubleheaders. Please plan ahead and visit our website for additional information about Wrigley Field parking, traffic, and safety measures.

As a reminder, our 44th Ward Shredding and Recycling event will take place on Saturday, May 9 from 9:00am-12:00pm at our Ward office, 3223 N Sheffield. We are also excited to announce that we will be accepting old electronics. Please remember to remove any metal or plastic materials from your papers before bringing them.

April street cleaning has officially come to an end, and my team and I have been on every street in the ward this month. I have now personally cleaned every residential street in the ward since taking office, and I am grateful to everyone who has come out to help keep our community clean. A special thank you to Shelby and the Lakeview chapter of Trash People for organizing 13 volunteers this past weekend.

In preparation for the upcoming demolition of the property located at 2800 N Sheridan, the southbound Sheridan bus shelter and the westbound Diversey bus shelter were temporarily removed. Please note that the stops will not be relocated. Demolition is anticipated to be completed by the end of July, weather permitting, and the shelters will be reinstalled at that time. While we understand this is a temporary inconvenience for riders, these removals are necessary for accessibility and public safety. Please contact our office at [email protected]
with any questions.

Thank you to everyone who participated in our instrument drive in partnership with Spirit of Harmony. The instruments collected were donated to Intonation Music, a Bronzeville nonprofit that provides youth with small-group music instruction and mentorship, as well as Hungry for Music. We are grateful to everyone who helped us bring more music to more young people across Chicago.

Have a great weekend.

Dear Neighbors,

With Earth Day tomorrow, there are many great opportunities to get involved right here in our community. You can join a park cleanup at Weisman Park from 9:00am-12:00pm or attend a recycling and donation event at Blaine Elementary from 10:00am-2:00pm. Across the city, the Chicago Park District is also hosting cleanups at more than 100 parks, continuing a long-standing tradition of caring for our shared green spaces. I encourage everyone to take part and to stay engaged year-round by connecting with local environmental groups for recycling tips and community cleanup opportunities.

On public safety, our office has started a waitlist for residents who would like to be notified when the 19th District hosts its next anti-theft steering wheel lock giveaway. These devices are an effective deterrent to vehicle theft, and I encourage you to sign up to stay informed. We are also encouraging residents to take part in a free, virtual su***de prevention training hosted by the Chicago Department of Public Health on April 24, which will help participants recognize warning signs and support individuals in crisis.

There are also several great community events coming up. Central Lake View Neighbors will host their annual Wine Tasting on April 19, and their plant and flower sale is currently underway. Both events support neighborhood initiatives and beautification efforts, and I encourage you to take part.

At this week’s City Council meeting, I was proud to bring our interns along to see local government in action and to recognize the important role they play in serving our community. City Council also confirmed Alderman Gil Villegas as the permanent Chair of the Zoning Committee. I will continue serving as Vice Chair and look forward to working together to advance development that expands affordable housing and strengthens our local economy.

I also recently sent a letter to the City’s 311 system recommending improvements to how hate-related graffiti is reported and tracked. With support from 42 of my colleagues, we are pushing for clearer categories so that serious incidents can be properly identified and prioritized. I am encouraged that 311 has agreed to evaluate these recommendations.

Finally, a reminder that April is Amnesty Month for City Stickers. Drivers can purchase their city stickers without late fees through the end of the month.

Have a great weekend!

Dear Neighbors,

Baseball season is officially back at Wrigley Field, with home games this weekend at 1:20pm each day. As we welcome fans back to the neighborhood, please remember to plan ahead for increased traffic, parking restrictions, and safety measures. Taking a few moments to review game day guidelines can help ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone.

Street sweeping is also underway across the ward. I ask that residents please move their cars during posted times so our crews can fully clear debris and prevent water buildup as we move further into spring. Thank you to everyone who has already been helping out! Your cooperation truly makes a difference in keeping our streets clean and our drainage systems functioning properly.

We were excited to celebrate the grand opening of POP/Culture Chicago on Clark Street, a unique new shop featuring craft sodas, collectibles, and vintage finds. It’s a fun and creative addition to the neighborhood, and I encourage you to stop by and support this local business.

In public safety news, vehicle break-ins targeting airbags continue to be an issue in our area, particularly impacting Honda Civics and Accords. Our office is working closely with CPD and a citywide taskforce to address this trend. We will continue to share updates, including opportunities to access anti-theft devices, and I encourage residents to remain vigilant.

I also want to share a team update from our office. After two years of dedicated service, Isaac Troncoso will be departing to return to New York City. Isaac has played a critical role in advancing major initiatives, including our Community Plan and housing efforts, and I am incredibly grateful for his work. At the same time, I am pleased to welcome Alex Ponder to the team. Alex brings strong experience in constituent services and community engagement, and I look forward to her continued work serving the 44th Ward.

Finally, I am excited to share that our expanded ADU program is already seeing strong momentum, with 126 applications submitted in just the first several days. This initiative is helping to create modest, neighborhood-scale housing options while supporting homeowners, and we will continue to keep you updated as it progresses.

As always, thank you for staying engaged and helping make our community a great place to live.

Sincerely,
Alderman Bennett Lawson

03/23/2026

Baseball is back at Wrigley! On Thursday, March 26th, the Cubs return home for their 2026 season opener against the Nationals, with first pitch scheduled for 1:20pm. There will be fireworks and a military flyover by members of the US Marine Corps at approximately 1:00pm on Thursday. Note there will also be a flyover on Wednesday at 3:00pm for practice.

Whether you're heading to the ballpark, supporting local businesses hosting events listed here, or simply navigating the neighborhood, we want to make sure you’re prepared for the activity that Opening Day brings.

As always, the City is coordinating across departments to keep people safe and have the day run as seamlessly as possible. Our office is working closely with the Cubs, Chicago Police Department, the Office of Emergency Management and Communications (OEMC), and other agencies to ensure a successful game day. You can find detailed resources—including maps of truck restrictions, street closures, rideshare/pedicab staging areas, and updates to e-scooter and Divvy e-bike information—on our Wrigley Field page. Also see that page for a pedestrian reroute near the Sheridan train station due to Kelly Park renovations.

Gates open two hours prior to the first pitch. Please remember that parking restrictions will be strictly enforced starting at 10:00am Thursday. Vehicles parked in violation—including on parts of Addison, Clark, Patterson, Cornelia, and Eddy—will be ticketed and towed two hours before a game until an hour after. Residential Permit Parking Zone 383 will be in effect for day games as well as night games. For night games later this season, restrictions begin at 5:00pm. If your vehicle is towed, call 311 to locate it.

Due to high pedestrian volumes, certain streets around the ballpark may close to vehicles before and after the game, including Addison, Clark, Waveland, and Sheffield. Truck access in the area is restricted beginning 90 minutes before the game until at least one hour afterward. As a reminder, this applies to moving trucks as well.

For rideshare users, designated pick-up and drop-off zones are located on Addison (between Halsted and Broadway) and Irving Park (between Clark and Seminary). A staffed bike valet service will be available near the Addison Red Line stop, beginning three hours before the game.

Fans are encouraged to use public transportation. CTA will run additional service on the Red Line, #152 Addison bus, and #22 Clark bus. See the Cubs' transit Home Opener page for other public transportation lines that serve the area. A $5 1-day pass offers unlimited rides for 24 hours.

Public safety is our top priority. Inside the stadium, you can report any issues by texting “FRIENDLY” to (773) 839-0282 with your location and a description of the concern. For non-emergency issues during home games, the Cubs Hotline is available at 1 (866)-4-CPD-TOW from one hour before until two hours after each game for parking and other quality of life issues. For emergencies, or if you notice something suspicious, please call 911. For more public safety information and tips, visit OEMC's website and the Cubs' Wrigley Field security page.

Thank you for your cooperation in making this day safe and enjoyable for everyone. If you have any questions or need assistance, contact our office at (773) 525-6034 or [email protected]. The first night game of the season will take place on Monday, March 30th at 6:40pm.

Dear Neighbors,

This February marks the 100th anniversary of Black History Month, which traces its roots right here in Chicago thanks to historian Carter G. Woodson. I encourage everyone to take part in the many programs, exhibits, performances, and discussions happening across our city to honor this important legacy.

There are still plenty of ways to enjoy our parks this winter. Outdoor ice skating rinks remain open through February 17, Chicago Park District fitness centers are free through February 15, and Sheil and Gill Parks are offering affordable classes and seasonal events for all ages.

On public safety, the Chicago Police Department has released its January 2026 In Review. The report shows declines in several major crime categories compared to last year, including shootings, robberies, and motor vehicle thefts. I encourage anyone interested to review the full report for more detail.

The Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce has also put together helpful neighborhood guides for Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine’s Day. They’re a great resource for planning a watch party, date night, or something in between while supporting our local bars and restaurants.

Please mark your calendars for our Annual Wrigley Field Community Meeting on Tuesday, February 24, from 6:00–7:30pm at Inter-American Magnet School. This is an opportunity to hear directly from City departments and the Chicago Cubs and learn more about what to expect as we prepare for the upcoming baseball season.

We’re also moving forward with the updated development at 3233 N Sheffield, bringing nearly 100 new apartments near the Belmont CTA station. At the same time, I encourage everyone to review and share feedback on our draft 44th Ward Design Guidelines so we can continue shaping development together.

Finally, a reminder that our office will be closed on Thursday, February 12, for Lincoln’s Birthday, and Monday, February 16, for Presidents’ Day.

Have a great weekend.

01/30/2026

Dear Neighbors,

I am horrified by the killing of Alex Pretti, a nurse and caregiver to our nation’s veterans, who was shot and killed by federal immigration agents last weekend. This senseless death demands accountability and reflects a deeply troubling pattern in ICE operations. Transparency, the rule of law, and the safety of our communities must always come first.

Earlier this month, I attended a City Council hearing with elected leaders from Minneapolis who shared their firsthand experiences with ICE activity. I have also signed on to legislation allowing COPA to investigate CPD for potential violations of Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance, because accountability matters.

As we continue through winter, there is still plenty happening in Lakeview. This weekend, enjoy free, family-friendly live ice sculpting, and be sure to check out neighborhood guides highlighting local bars and restaurants for Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine’s Day. Supporting local businesses remains one of the best ways to strengthen our community.

On public safety, while overall crime trends are moving in the right direction, CPD is monitoring increases in bike thefts and airbag thefts from certain Honda models. I encourage residents to register their bikes and review prevention tips to help protect their property.

With the March 17 Midterm Primary approaching, now is a great time to apply for Vote By Mail or join the permanent roster. Ballots begin going out February 5, and Chicago is still seeking Election Judges and High School Student Judges to help staff polling places.

We are also seeking feedback on the draft 44th Ward Design Guidelines, have formally requested a traffic study for Inner Lake Shore Drive between Belmont and Grace, and encourage residents to review and comment on the City’s draft five-year plan to prevent and end homelessness.

Thank you for staying engaged and involved. Have a great weekend.
