Our Story

Since its inception in 1988, IHC has worked to ensure that all of the federal nutrition and health programs remain strong and are fully funded at the federal level and effectively administered at the state and local levels.

The Illinois Hunger Coalition (IHC) is the only statewide membership organization that works to end hunger and address the underlying causes by working for a deeper and more transformative approach to economic and racial justice. IHC’s goal is to organize grassroots collaborative efforts across low-income communities to expand programs that reduce poverty, bring federal and state resources to low-income communities, and train less advantaged people to become leaders. The Illinois Hunger Coalition seeks to alleviate and end hunger and the underlying causes through community organizing, advocating for progressive public policies, and public education.

The IHC provides assistance in English and Spanish to low-income households through its statewide toll-free Hunger Hotline. Callers are assisted in applying for: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP); All Kids/Medicaid/Medicare. IHC also offers referrals for: Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC); food pantries and soup kitchens; senior nutrition and health programs; other federal nutrition programs (SFSP, CACFP, Meals on Wheels, and At-Risk After School Snacks and Suppers); child care; and housing assistance. As a result of individual and systemic problems identified through calls to the Hunger Hotline, IHC works with local and state administrators at the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS) and the Department of Health Care and Family Services (HFS) offices to identify, address, and address barriers to access to nutrition and health programs. Over 10,000 families on average per year receive services and information via the statewide Hunger Hotline
