The mission of the Department of Streets and Sanitation is to provide a safe and healthy environment on the streets and alleys of Chicago through the effective management of the collection, disposal and recycling of residential refuse, the sweeping and plowing of streets, the timely removal of graffiti, the cleaning of vacant lots, the demolition of garages, the efficient towing of illegally parked vehicles, the abatement of rodents and the planting, trimming and removal of trees.

Plastic cups are difficult for recycling facilities to sort and there are limited markets available to recycle them into new products. Consider choosing paper cups, which are accepted in the blue cart, or reusable cups. Find more recycling tips at Chicagorecycles.org.

DSS Forestry crews are out citywide responding to tree emergencies and other storm-related damage. Crews will continue working to clear blocked roadways and remove debris.

Residents should take caution if they have or encounter a downed tree. Visit 311.chicago.gov, use the CHI311 app or dial 3-1-1 to report any issues so requests can be tracked and addressed as efficiently as possible.

Stretchy plastics like bags and bubble wrap, as well as cords, wires, hoses, and wire hangers create big problems for sorting machines and the folks who work to keep them running. Keep them OUT of the blue cart. Use the Recycle Coach app to find better options for disposal!
