We’re honored to share that Family Rescue is receiving a grant through United Way of Metro Chicago’s Response Fund.

Across the Chicago region, the housing crisis is putting immense pressure on individuals and families — high rent, eviction risk, and lost or unstable income. This support helps us respond when our neighbors need it most.

Through the Response Fund, United Way of Metro Chicago is investing $250,000 in 20 organizations — including Family Rescue — to immediately address housing and homelessness prevention, as needs continue to rise in the latest 211 Metro Chicago data.

The need is growing: United Way of Metro Chicago’s 24/7 social services helpline saw a 56% increase in housing-related requests from Cook County residents in April 2026 compared to April 2025. Housing support also made up 65% of all needs identified through 2-1-1.

Abuse doesn't always look like we think it will. People who choose to engage in abusive behavior will often see themselves as the victim and claim they are the one being victimized.

Excerpt: “Our abusers are praised sometimes, even after we come out and tell the truth,” he continues. “And I just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone and that there’s other survivors out there that understand what you’re going through and that are there with you. And that if you’re feeling all the feels, then lean into people that are close to you, lean into people that support you and that give you love and know that you’re not alone. … [T]elling the truth and telling what happened is a good thing and that it’s part of your healing.”

Excerpts: An incident in which an abuser kills their partner and then dies by su***de happens on average more than once a day, according to Everytown for Gun Safety. Of those tragedies, 85% involved a firearm and 95% were women killed by male partners.

Guns are a uniquely lethal tool in domestic violence situations. When an abuser has access to a gun, the risk that he will shoot and kill his intimate partner increases by 1,000%. Abusers with access to a gun are five times more likely to kill a female victim, with an average of 70 women shot and killed by an intimate partner every month in the U.S. Black women experience intimate partner homicide-su***de with a gun at nearly a 20% higher rate than white women.

Shootings like the ones carried out by Justin Fairfax and Shamar Elkins happen at least once a day in the U.S.
