"Black youth may experience disproportionate exposure to violence or traumatic stressors, both of which have been associated with suicidal behavior," the study states. "Also, research has shown that black youth are less likely to receive services for depression, suicidal ideation and other mental health problems compared with nonblack youth." ***dePrevention

A new study from the American Academy of Pediatrics analyzes su***de rates among children 5-14 from 2003 to 2012 and finds an increase among black children.

"Race is not a skill or characteristic that should have any market value as it relates to your wages, but it does," said Valerie Wilson, the director of the program on Race, Ethnicity and the Economy at the Economic Policy Institute and a co-author of the report.

The wage gap between blacks and whites is the worst it's been in nearly four decades, according to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute.

The gains at Marshall, Phillips High School on the South Side, and other black schools helped drive up the citywide African-American graduation rate by 4 percentage points, a slightly higher rate of improvement than the district as a whole. But the racial gap in graduation rates is still stark: White students posted a graduation rate of 81 percent, compared to 67 percent for African-American students. The rate for Latinos is now 78 percent.

High schools that enroll black and Latino students are making progress in raising graduation rates. But the gap between black and white students, especially males, remains wide.

The idea of the museum was first proposed in 1915 by black veterans of the Civil War. A year later, Rep. Leonidas C. Dyer, R-Mo., introduced HR 18721, a bill that called for a commission to "secure plans and designs for a monument or memorial to the memory of the negro soldiers and sailors who fought in the wars of our country." Three years later, Dyer — who also authored the 1918 Dyer Anti-Lynching bill — upped the ante and drafted a bill to erect an African-American monument in the capital.

The complicated history of how the National Museum of African American History and Culture finally moved from conversation to construction may be as compelling as the artifacts in its exhibits.

These very positive results were largely driven by two factors: a stronger labor market that finally began to lift the living standards of low- and middle-income working families and the diffusion of health coverage because of the Affordable Care Act.

New Census Bureau numbers show that poverty went down, there were fewer without insurance, and middle-class incomes went up last year. The one-two punch of tighter labor markets and Obamacare made the difference.

With suburban he**in overdoses spiking, the Illinois General Assembly quickly passed the He**in Crisis Act last year. It allows pharmacies to dispense he**in overdose reversal drugs, such as naloxone, to individuals without a prescription. Though Governor Bruce Rauner recently signed new legislation aimed at illegal gun trafficking, community-based anti-violence programs were irreparably harmed by the yearlong state budget impasse that froze funding.

Sympathy for suburban moms who lose kids to he**in; blame for urban moms who lose kids to violence.

In Philadelphia, the number of black teachers declined by 18.5 percent between 2001 and 2012. In Chicago, the black teacher population dropped by nearly 40 percent. Many of these departures came as part of mass layoffs and closings in schools with low test scores, a policy promoted with federal and state dollars since 2002.

Investigating the school crisis no one is talking about.
