The Keep Chicago Housed Coalition is grateful to learn that all the necessary funds to protect 3,000 people’s housing are in Mayor Johnson’s proposed budget. This is an important first step toward protecting affordable housing in Chicago. It will help protect Chicagoans from the federal government’s harmful actions and stabilize locally funded programs that provide essential affordable housing to our most vulnerable residents.

We hope that the urgent need to fund housing remains a priority for City Council and that Permanent Supportive Housing, the Chicago Low Income Housing Trust Fund and The Flexible Housing Pool remain fully funded in the final budget approved later this year. Once we protect these current housing programs, the City must invest more funds in what we know solves homelessness — permanent affordable housing with wraparound services. Today we are one step closer to protecting 3,000 people's housing! Mayor Johnson announced that the necessary funds to protect permanent housing and supportive services will be included in his proposed budget. Now, in the coming weeks we have to ensure that these urgent housing priorities remain in the final budget package city council passes later this year. Last spring, CCH and our allies in Springfield successfully fought back against $11.4 million in proposed cuts to Home Illinois, the state’s comprehensive strategy to address homelessness. Now five years since the implementation of the plan, some progress has been made, but federal cuts to critical funding and increasing housing costs are creating additional challenges as we attempt to make headway in decreasing homelessness across the state.

More than 60 advocates, alderpeople, and housing and service providers gathered outside City Hall this morning to call on city leaders to include $30 million in the FY2027 city budget to prevent 3,000 Chicagoans from losing their homes amid drastic federal funding cuts and unexpected shortfalls in local housing programs.

The Edrika Fulford Mutual Aid Fund is closed! Thank you to everyone who applied and followed along.

For this round, we were only able to accept 400 applications. If you submitted an application, you can expect to hear back on the status of your application within 30 days. Please note that submission of an application is not a guarantee of funding. All applications will be randomized via lottery and then reviewed for eligibility by a committee of grassroots leaders.

CCH and our partners, especially those in Protect Our Care Illinois, are deeply concerned by the upcoming changes to the Medicaid program, affecting the health coverage of hundreds of thousands of low-income Illinoisans. Starting October 1, noncitizen adults will lose Medicaid coverage. Additionally, almost 700,000 Illinoisans will face new strict work requirements and all Medicaid recipients will be required to submit extra documentation to keep their insurance coverage starting in January, burdens that will block access to life-saving care for the most vulnerable among us.

These changes are part of a series of harmful changes dictated by the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” (H.R. 1) passed by Congress in July 2025, and mirror a nationwide increase in hostility towards immigrants, low-income people, and people experiencing homelessness.

Housing and health are inextricably linked. For those experiencing homelessness and housing instability, access to health care is an essential requirement for long-term stability and can quite literally be a matter of life and death.

We need a local government that shows up for our communities. Join our coalition of community organizations and concerned Chicagoans next Thursday to demand City Council fund housing in the 2027 city budget!

More than 50,000 people experience homelessness in Chicago each year—whether that’s sleeping outside, on couches, or in shelters. We need more affordable housing, not less. But right now, 3,000 people are at risk of losing their housing due to federal cuts and shortfalls in funding for local programs. We need consistent, local funding to ensure stability for our neighbors.
