The Anti-Hate Action Center at the Chinese American Service League denounces the racist comments made by Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen towards Yanqi Xu, a journalist for the Flatwater Free Press. Yanqi wrote an investigative story on the high nitrate levels in the Governor’s hog farming company. His only response to the story was a dismissal of her article since “the author is from Communist China”. Furthermore, when asked if he read her article, Governor Pillen went on to say, "All you got to do is look at the author. The author is from Communist China. What more do you need to know?”

Governor Pillen’s dismissal of Yanqi’s story and work solely based on her race will not be tolerated and we commend Yanqi for speaking up. Such anti-Asian and xenophobic attacks must be collectively called out to stop the further spread of hate. Rather than fostering a welcoming environment for Asian Americans in Nebraska, Governor Pillen is contributing to the rise in anti-Asian racism and must be held accountable for his racist remarks.
We look forward to hearing Governor Pillen’s apology to Yanqi Xu.

CASL and our Anti-Hate Action Center stand with the Jacksonville community as they mourn the tragic loss of Angela Carr (52), Anolt “AJ” Laguerre Jr. (19), and Jerrald Gallion (29). They were all Black individuals brutally killed on Saturday due to a racially motivated shooting by a white man at the Dollar General in Jacksonville, Florida. Authorities have retrieved some of the gunman’s manifestos with anti-Black, anti-Semitic, and anti-LGBTQ rants. The FBI and law enforcement are investigating this tragedy as a federal hate crime.

As we stand in solidarity with the thousands of people who marched in Washington, D.C. this past weekend to continue fighting for racial justice and civil rights, and as we remember the horrifying murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi 68 years ago this week, we again grieve for precious lives lost again due to hate. Enough is enough. As we stand in solidarity with the thousands of people who marched in Washington, D.C., this past weekend to continue fighting for racial justice and civil rights, and as we remember the horrifying murder of Emmett Till in Mississippi 68 years ago this week, we again grieve for precious lives lost again due to hate. Enough is enough. We at the Chinese American Service League Anti-Hate Action Center continue to join in the work to stand up against all forms of hate. Together, we must stop the spread of hate by fostering acceptance, inclusion, and equality!

Everyone can be an active ally to their fellow neighbor or colleague. If you see something, say something. Individuals can scan QR codes on CTA buses, trains, and CTA platforms to report a hate crime or incident to the Anti-Hate Action Center as well as seek victim support services, request anti-hate educational workshops, and obtain resources which are all available at reporthatemidwest.org. Hate and violence have no home in Jacksonville, Florida and every town and city in this country.

Did you know that Stop AAPI Hate counted nearly 11,500 hate crimes targeting Asian Americans from March 2020 to March 2022? We also know that number is vastly undercounted, as many AANHPI individuals do not report hate crimes and incidents. Now there is a resource to report any hate incident or corruption to the nonprofit Anti-Hate Action Center at

Thank you Warehouse Workers For Justice (WWJ) for inviting the Chinese American Service League to participate in WWJ's community resource meeting. Over 100 community members, workers, Will County elected officials, and partner organizations came out to discuss workplace issues and support for the fight for workers' rights. We were able to share CASL's Employment and Financial Empowerment resources and Anti-Hate Action Center services for those experiencing hate and discrimination at work.

Today, we honor the seven Sikh community members ultimately killed in the 2012 mass shooting at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin: Paramjit Kaur Saini, Sita Singh, Ranjit Singh, Prakash Singh, Suveg Singh Khattra, Satwant Singh Kaleka, and Baba Punjab Singh.

On August 5th, 2012, a gunman with neo-Nazi and white supremacist ties entered a gurdwara (Sikh house of worship) in Oak Creek, WI and murdered six people and injured several others. Now there are seven people whose families and friends are missing them because of an act of violence done in hate. The CASL Anti-Hate Action Center strives to create a community where acts of hate do not go unnoticed. Through education, reporting, and advocacy, we are dedicated to decreasing the occurrences of hate crimes and incidents. We hope our collective work with other partner organizations will lead to a world without senseless tragedies like the one in Oak Creek 11 years before.
