Hello!

UIC is about to start up the Fall 2017 semester. I hope everyone starts off this academic year well. As student trustee, I want to keep open communication and transparency with UIC's student body. To open an avenue of communication, I will be having open-door hours on Fridays from 2pm – 5pm. If you cannot make this time, please email me at [email protected] and we will schedule a meeting or phone call. The student trustee office is located on the third floor of the Center for Student Involvement at Student Center East. Any matter of importance to you is welcome in discussion. Your voice matters.

Start the semester strong!

Best,
Karina Reyes

SB 308: This bill would affirmatively allow DACA recipients to apply for and receive professional licenses from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. Due to the complex relationship between federal and state law, SB 308 is desirable to clarify that DACA recipients will be treated like any other persons who are federally authorized to work. Under SB 308, DACA recipients who meet all regular requirements to receive a license may work as doctors, nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, dentists, veterinarians, private detectives, engineers, cosmetologists, architects, and in many more careers.

The EMPOWERMENT campaign is happy to announce victory on International Women's Day in the student elections for the 2017-2018 academic year. We have made herstory. Yohana Ghdey, Asiel Mohamed, and I (Karina Reyes) will be representing the students at the University of Illinois at Chicago for the 2017-2018 school year as USG President, USG Vice President, and Student Trustee. We are humbled to have been elected into these positions.

We will empower the students of the University of Illinois at Chicago. We will transform the relationship Undergraduate Student Government has with its student body at UIC. We will serve as a bridge that connects our administration to our students. We are from the community, we are elected by the community, and we will be held accountable by the community.

We look forward to serving our communities in the year to come. We would also like to commend Elect Jacob Schulz for Student Member of the Board of Trustees and A Better UIC: United Innovative Committed for their campaigns. We look forward to seeing their initiatives unfurl at UIC through their activism.

Thank you to all who voted for EMPOWERMENT. Thank you to our communities who mobilized in our favor. Thank you to our mentors who guided us. Thank you for giving Yohana, Asiel, and I the opportunity to bring this university EMPOWERMENT.

There is still time to vote for EMPOWERMENT. Vote Karina, Yohana, and Asiel at uicvote.com !!! Let's make history !
