Recently, Rabbi Michelle Stern and Sharon Dornberg-Lee, LCSW proudly represented CJE at JUF’s Advocacy Day in Springfield, joining fellow organizations at the State Capitol to advocate for policies that strengthen and support the communities we serve.
A key focus of our advocacy was HR4238, legislation initiated by CJE to expand access to Supportive Living Facilities for individuals with early onset dementia. Under Illinois’ current Medicaid waiver, individuals must be 65 or older to qualify for this level of care, leaving many younger seniors without appropriate support when they need it most.
Through our advocacy efforts, Rabbi Stern and Sharon Dornberg-Lee shared powerful, real-life stories of CJE clients who have been unable to access Supportive Living due to age restrictions. These meaningful conversations helped underscore the urgent need for change, and we were encouraged to gain several new co-sponsors for the bill. We remain committed to advocacy on behalf of older adults and their families, ensuring they have equitable access to the care, dignity, and support they deserve.
