A retired 3rd Ward alderwoman and lifelong civil rights activist, Dorothy Tillman served on Chicago’s City Council from 1985 to 2007. She was a national voice for reparations for slavery, a champion for affordable housing and economic investment in Black communities, and the founder of the Harold Washington Cultural Center in Bronzeville. Her career reflects decades of bold, unapologetic advocacy.

In 1971, Anna Langford became the first Black woman elected to the Chicago City Council, representing the 16th Ward. A civil rights attorney who worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., she fought housing discrimination, police misconduct, and racial injustice on the South Side. Her leadership broke political barriers and paved the way for generations of Black women in Chicago politics.
