At Center for Story & Witness (formerly The Voices and Faces Project) our mission is to cultivate and share stories that bear witness to gender-based violence and other social injustices in order to change minds, hearts, and public policies. Ream’s vision is to place a human face on a devastating public health and human rights issue which impacts as many as one in five women and one in thirty-thre
e men in the US. Ream, who is herself a survivor of rape, sought to create a "safe space" for other survivors to share their names, faces and stories, one in which a diverse community of women and men could testify to their experiences, knowing that such testimony would be used to change minds, hearts and public policies on rape and abuse. When the first 5 survivor stories and photos collected by our organization were included on our launch website (voicesandfaces.org) we received over 2 millions hits within the first two months of the site launch, a reinforcement of how hungry survivors were to encounter the stories of others who had lived through rape.
