Connections for Abused Women and their Children

Connections for Abused Women and their Children Rebuilding Lives, Renewing Hope. We also created one of the first medically-based domestic violence programs in Chicago in 1992 at John H. Stroger Jr.

Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC) is a 501(c)(3) organization providing emergency response and comprehensive domestic violence services, enabling survivors to access the tools they need to increase their safety and establish independence. Since its inception in 1977 with the establishment of the first domestic violence hotline , CAWC has continued to meet the needs of survivor

s by expanding programming throughout the community. The agency currently operates four programs at five different locations in the city of Chicago: Greenhouse Shelter, the Humboldt Park Outreach Program (HPOP), the Hospital Crisis Intervention Project (HCIP) and Domestic Violence Services at Haymarket Center. In 1977 CAWC established Chicago’s first domestic violence hot line and in 1979 opened the first domestic violence shelter in Chicago. CAWC fills a large gap in need on the West Side of Chicago, as we are the only organization in the community that is providing comprehensive domestic violence services for both adult survivors and their children, including walk-in and appointment-based outreach services, a safe and confidential shelter, and hospital-based services. Hospital of Cook County; because of the program’s tremendous impact, it became a national model for similar programs. In addition to our direct service provision to survivors of domestic violence, CAWC also provides hundreds of hours of public education, trainings, and workshops to healthcare providers, social service organizations, government agencies, and the public at large.

Survivors deserve to be seen, supported, and prioritized, but Chicago’s current approach is falling short. A new Block Club Chicago investigation highlights how millions were invested in a police-run domestic violence program that advocates—including CAWC—say is not reaching survivors or connecting them to the services they actually need.

CAWC stands with partner organizations across Chicago in calling for investments that center survivors—funding the services that truly support safety, healing, and long-term stability.

As Illinois and the city of Chicago continue to see an increasing need for domestic violence shelter, it becomes even harder for agencies like CAWC to meet survivors where they are and provide emergency support. Thanks to our partners at The Network - Advocating Against Domestic Violence and their diligent work with their Measuring Safety data reports, we can see just how critical our services are year after year - and what sort of programs will make a difference. That's why CAWC created our Safe Night Fund, allowing more survivors to access safety and wraparound support by securing emergency hotel stays. We don't need to be limited or turn families away from safety, and that's what the Safe Night Fund is all about.

CAWC understands the importance of mental health services when a survivor of domestic violence calls our hotline or walks through our doors. That is why our trauma informed therapy programs aim to make a substantial impact in our clients' lives in three key ways: enhanced emotional recovery, empowerment and autonomy, and improving parental skills.
