Are you a Chicago resident in housing now but at risk of becoming homeless due to eviction, loss of income or other emergency?

You may be eligible for help from the City of Chicago Department of Family and Support Services’ Rental Assistance Program (RAP).

RAP helps Chicagoans who have housing right now, but who may become homeless soon because they have lost income or had another eligible emergency which prevents them from paying rent.

Help for families who are eligible may include:

- Payment of future rent or rent in arrears to prevent eviction

- Security deposits in cases of fire, flood, foreclosure, domestic violence or court-ordered eviction

The RAP application process is open now.

Yesterday’s event was very productive and encouraging. I was able to connect with individuals and organizations who are truly doing the work in the community.

Gentle Helpers Connections Placement and Referral Agency received seven new housing assistance prescreening applications, and I also made several new contacts with potential referral partners — including a Veteran nonprofit organization that serves veterans who may need housing assistance.

One thing that stood out to me is how much interest there is around shared housing. Every time I mentioned it, someone either knew a person in need of housing or knew someone with a property who may want to start a housing program.

That’s why events like this matter. They help us build partnerships, create new referral pathways, and connect with people we may not reach online.

If you are a housing provider, nonprofit, community organization, landlord, social worker, case manager, or service provider, I encourage you to participate in local resource events whenever you can. You never know who you’ll meet, what partnerships may form, or how many housing leads may come from simply showing up.

Community work grows through connection. Yesterday was a beautiful reminder of that.

Housing providers, don’t get discouraged. The right residents are out there — but sometimes they need help finding the right housing pathway, and providers need support connecting with applicants who are a better fit.

At Gentle Helpers Connections, we help bridge that gap through housing navigation, applicant prescreening, referral coordination, and ongoing communication.

This work is about more than filling rooms. It’s about creating safe spaces, building stronger partnerships, and helping people find a place to call home.

Every flyer, every referral, every conversation, and every connection matters. 🏡

Let’s keep planting seeds and building stronger communities together.

The face of homelessness is changing.

Many individuals and families experiencing housing instability are working, earning income, and doing their best to stay afloat — but rising rents, high move-in costs, and limited affordable housing options are making stability harder to reach.

At Gentle Helpers Connections, we are seeing more working parents, young adults, and families who need help navigating housing options before their situation becomes a crisis.

Some are sleeping in cars. Some are staying with relatives or friends. Some are moving from place to place while still showing up for work every day.

Having a job should not mean someone is automatically housed.

If you have verifiable income and are experiencing housing instability, Gentle Helpers Connections may be able to help you explore available housing options and stabilization resources.

💛 Refer. Share. Support.Together, we can help connect people to resources that make a difference.
