Have you been feeling like you’re in danger? Maybe your home isn’t a place you consider safe. Think about developing your own safety plan. Here are some tips to get started, to have an in-depth safety plan that is fit to your needs please contact us at 773-904-0143.

Transcript: How do I safety plan?? There are many different ways! There are two important things to think about. First, think about, who is a person I trust? Meaning, in the event of an emergency, whose home could I go to? If I don't trust anyone, that's okay. Then think about, where is there a shelter near my home? Where is the police station near my home? Those are things to figure out. Secondly, think about where are all my important papers. What exactly are important papers? Important documents include medicine, birth certificate, Social security card, maybe the lease to your apartment. These are all documents that can be beneficial to keep in one place. You can put them all in one bag, an emergency bag. Then if an emergency happens, you have a bag ready to grab and bring to where you need to go. Remember, safety planning is constantly changing, and that's okay. If you need a personalized, in depth safety plan, contact us at VP 773-904-0143.

What do some of our CHS staff do to cope and take care of themselves? Our Domestic Violence advocate, Gabriella shares her favorite ways to manage stress. Comment how you like to take care of yourself!

Transcript: Hello! So, what do I do for healthy coping and self care? First, it's important to remember that this look different for every individual, the strategies are not the same all around. For me, when I find myself in a conversation or doing something that is stressful, I start to feel overwhelmed, or maybe I even start to get elevated and feel soon I will be angry, I tend to take a break. That could mean going into a different room to breathe and be able to calm down. It could mean going on a walk to think to myself and be alone. Now, what do I do for self care? It's so simple! For me, I light a candle, or I watch my favorite TV show. It's really important to remember that self-care doesn't need to be hard. It can actually be very simple. Happy Holidays!

Maybe you’re questioning what a healthy relationship looks like versus an unhealthy one. Healthy relationships include communicating, seeing each other as equals, apologizing, and supporting one another. Unhealthy relationships include blaming, gaslighting, and denying. Unhealthy relationships get violent verbally, physically and/or sexually. If you’re questioning your relationship today, call us at VP: 773-904-0143.

Storytime! Meet Kathryn. Kathryn's family learned she was Deaf when she was three years old. As a family they immediately began to use sign language, but as they looked toward Kathryn’s transition from preschool to kindergarten, they learned that her new school would not provide an interpreter. That’s when Karla from CHS’s youth program stepped in. Karla worked tirelessly to guide Kathryn's parents through the school system’s arduous appeals process. “Raising a child, where communication is a different language than our own, can be very challenging,” said Laurie, Kathryn's mom. “Knowing that Chicago Hearing Society is here to support Kathryn’s unique needs gives us a sense of comfort. We’re thankful that those services will be available not just today but throughout her life.” This is what we mean when we say .
