August 31 is Overdose Awareness Day.

It is a time to name the reality of overdose, reduce stigma around addiction, and hold space for the grief carried by families and friends. It is also a chance to share resources, talk openly about overdose signs, and remind young people and caregivers that support matters.

What should families know before a crisis happens?

Recognizing the signs of substance use and overdose, understanding risks like polydrug use and redosing, and knowing how tools like Naloxone (Narcan®) work can help people respond earlier and more safely.

At YOS, our substance use prevention and treatment programs give youth and families evidence-based, community-based support across Chicago and surrounding communities.
