This Memorial Day, we remember and honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and the state of Wyoming. They truly embodied what it means to be the Sword and Shield for our state and nation.

While this list represents only a few of Wyoming’s fallen heroes, we remember and honor every service member who gave their life in defense of freedom and the American people. Their courage, sacrifice and legacy will never be forgotten.

Spc. Quentin Romero
A 22-year-old Soldier from Rawlins assigned to the 115th Field Artillery Rear Detachment. Romero was killed Feb. 14, 2025, during a tragic 26-vehicle pileup in the westbound Interstate 80 tunnel near Green River while serving his community and state.

• Capt. Robert Lawrence Lucero
A 34-year-old Soldier from Casper assigned to the 4th Infantry Division Rear Area Operations Center. Lucero became the first overseas combat casualty for the Wyoming Army National Guard during Operation Iraqi Freedom after being killed by an IED near Tikrit, Iraq, on Sept. 25, 2003.

• Capt. Bruce E. Hays
A 42-year-old field artillery officer from Cheyenne assigned to Joint Force Headquarters. Hays became the Wyoming National Guard’s first combat loss during Operation Enduring Freedom after his vehicle was struck by an IED in Gerdia Seria, Afghanistan, on Sept. 17, 2008.

• Chief Warrant Officer 3 Andrew L. McAdams
A 27-year-old Soldier from Cheyenne assigned to Detachment 53, Operational Support Airlift Command. McAdams was killed Jan. 10, 2013, during an aircraft crash in Afghanistan while supporting combat operations.

• Sgt. 1st Class Michael C. Parrott
A Wyoming National Guard Soldier who volunteered to deploy with the Pennsylvania National Guard. Parrott was killed Nov. 10, 2005, by enemy small arms fire in Balad, Iraq.

Today, we honor their legacy and all Wyoming National Guard members who have served in defense of freedom around the world.

Wyoming agencies are strengthening coordination and readiness ahead of the 2026 wildfire season.

Last week, the Wyoming State Forestry Division hosted a wildfire readiness meeting with the Wyoming National Guard, Wyoming Office of Homeland Security and representatives from the Governor’s Office to discuss lessons learned, improve interagency communication and enhance response capabilities before the next fire starts.

“Wildfire response starts with relationships and communication,” said Brig. Gen. Michelle Mulberry, director of joint staff for the Wyoming National Guard. “By bringing agencies together before fire season, we strengthen readiness, improve coordination and ensure we are prepared to protect Wyoming communities.”

The Wyoming National Guard routinely supports wildfire response operations across the state through aviation support, personnel, equipment and interagency coordination during emergency operations.

Strong partnerships today help ensure a faster, more unified response when Wyoming communities are threatened tomorrow.

Leadership Wyoming got a firsthand look at the Wyoming Army National Guard’s aviation mission during a visit to the Army Aviation Support Facility in Cheyenne.

Participants toured hangars and maintenance areas, learned how UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters are prepared for missions, and experienced a flight over Cheyenne aboard a Black Hawk helicopter.

From emergency response and disaster relief to transportation and statewide support, Army aviation remains a critical part of the Wyoming National Guard’s mission to serve communities across Wyoming and the nation.

Testing grit, skill and endurance.

Thirteen of Wyoming’s top Soldiers competed in the 2026 Wyoming Army National Guard State Best Warrior Competition at Camp Guernsey Joint Training Center, pushing themselves through four days of physical and mental challenges designed to identify the best of the best.

From the Army Fitness Test and day/night land navigation to weapons assembly, call-for-fire simulations and combat medical scenarios, competitors were tested far beyond their comfort zones.

Congratulations to:
• Sgt. Colby Stockton, Charlie Co., 1st Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment — Noncommissioned Officer Winner
• Spc. Carlos Montes, Delta Co., 1st Battalion, 297th Infantry Regiment — Junior Enlisted Winner

Both Soldiers will advance to regional competition in North Dakota.

The competition also showcased the professionalism, resilience and camaraderie that define the Wyoming Army National Guard.

“Just send it. Never turn down an opportunity, and this is a pretty good one.” — Sgt. Colby Stockton
