Since May is Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month, here is a selection of historic Wyoming photos and Mansion artifacts to celebrate Wyoming's connection to it!

One of the two reasons why May is the designated month is related to railroad history; May 10, 1869 marked the completion of the transcontinental railroad, which was built largely by Chinese laborers. The other milestone was the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843 (in Fairhaven, Massachusetts), predating Wyoming's time as a U.S. Territory! The following photo information is in the order as you flip through them (not the way they are displayed in the three-frame collage). Great thanks to Wyoming State Archives for these photos!

๐Ÿ“ธ Group of Japanese women and children, HGM Front Steps, taken in the late 1920s during Gov. Frank Emerson's term (1927-1931):
First Lady Jean Emerson was very involved in Japanese outreach work, carried out by a group of women from Mrs. Emerson's Cheyenne church. Since her church group had ties to the 1920s Japanese community, they were approached about helping the women to learn English so they could better interact in town. For example, imagine how difficult buying groceries would be when you don't speak the local language, and the check-out experience is all cashier-assisted, not like today's automatic check-outs!
๐Ÿ“ธ Japanese railroad repairmen, taken in 1906 near Red Buttes, WY:
A photographic tie to the generations of Asian railroad workers of the Wild West, 37 years after the completion of the transcontinental railroad in May 1869.
๐Ÿ“ธ Chinese Dragon parade, taken about the 1890s, Evanston/Rock Springs, WY:
The Chinese dragon was brought to the United States by Ah Say, the head of Union Pacific Coal Company's Chinese workers. He was in charge of recruitment, and also acted as a translator/advocate between U.P. Coal and the Chinese miners. The silk dragon danced at the Lunar New Year festivals in Evanston/Rock Springs in the 1880s-1890s, and the Joss House of Evanston served as the epicenter of the Chinese community in the region prior to 1885, being the only one of it's kind between the two coasts.

And the 1930s Drawing Room of the has many artifacts related to Asian culture (maybe a connection to First Lady Emerson's outreach work with the Japanese community), so take a closer look on your next visit!

๐Ÿ’  This pair of identical lamps are carved from soap stone, and are included in the Permanent Collection (items the First Families interacted with). They were transferred from the Governors' current residence in 2001; on their recent visit, the Hathaway daughters said how they remember the lamps from their teenage years spent living at the Mansion (1967-1975)!
๐Ÿ’  This pair of figures are hand-carved from rosewood, and are also in the Permanent Collection of artifacts. They may seem identical at first glance, but look closer to notice the different hand-held object of each figure.

๐Ÿ’ Happy Mother's Day from the Historic Governors' Mansion! ๐Ÿ’

Since the is not open today, we hope you enjoy these historic photos to commemorate this special day. Thank you, , for these wonderful shots! ๐Ÿ“ธ And we invite you to belatedly celebrate Motherโ€™s Day with us later this week (free admission Wednesday - Saturday, 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)! We canโ€™t wait to see you!

๐Ÿ”ธ Frances Helen Warren Pershing and her four children (three daughters and one son [in no particular order]: Helen, Ann, Warren, Mary Margaret) in an undated picture (let us hypothesize from about 1910). A First Family member from Cheyenne's territorial times, Frances Helen was not only the first-born child of Governor Francis E. Warren and First Lady Helen M. Smith Warren (hence her namesake from both her parents), but she was also the wife of Captain John J. Pershing (another famous name of Cheyenne and its military base).
๐Ÿ”ธ First Lady Alice C. Donoghue Barrett and her three children (two sons and one daughter [in no particular order]: Frank, James, Marialyce) in a picture dated from the 1920s. Alice was the wife of Governor Frank A. Barrett, who served as the 15th state governor of Wyoming from 1951-1953. The Barretts' kids had children of their own by the time Governor Barrett was in office; our Drawing Room has a lovely 1950s family photo of them (including their five grandchildren), taken in the exact same room!
๐Ÿ”ธ First Lady [Zenia] Jean Emerson, Governor Frank C. Emerson, and their three sons ([in no particular order] Frank Junior, David, Eugene) on the Mansion steps in an undated picture. The Emersons served as the First Family from 1927-1931, following Nellie Tayloe Ross's time in office.
๐Ÿ”ธ And, according to the Wyoming State Archives, it turns out this photo of "three kiddos and a cat" are the three Emerson sons! The records say "undated," but obviously this photo is from long before they were considered the First Family...and it goes to show how "cat photography" has always been a favorite subject.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our fourth and final speaker series!

It was a GREAT lecture that gave attendees a stronger appreciation for women and their roles in the Revolutionary war.

The Historic Governors' Mansion's phone is temporarily without voicemail!
โ—๐Ÿ“žโ—
The HGM can still receive/make phone calls, but voicemail is currently not available. We thank you for your patience as we work to resolve this, especially if you're calling with questions/tour interest for both sites: the HGM or the Quebec 01 Historic Site. We will announce when our phone's voicemail has been restored. Until then, your cooperation is sincerely appreciated.

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Annual Egg Hunt!

The event was well attended, and lasted roughly 2 minutes! In that time, over 1,400 eggs were found.

And, as always, a very special thank-you to our staff and volunteers! We couldn't have done it without you!

Thank you to all visitors of 2025 for experiencing our "Victorian Christmas"! ๐ŸŽฉ๐Ÿคฉ๐ŸŽฉ

It was an incredible and beautiful exhibit to be seen by all; from those who attended the Opening Reception (pictured carolers & Crow Creek Catering food), to the those that made it in this past Saturday for the exhibit's final date (Dec 20). staff and volunteers hope everyone enjoyed exploring the Victorian decor as much as we enjoyed putting it together.

The Mansion is now closed to the public until April 2026, when we kick off our Summer Season. But stay tuned for pop-up events, like our First Day Hike on New Year's Day at 10am (this site's "hike" meaning "a historic neighborhood walk")! ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ

The Mansion is at its best when it is shared with others; here's to the rest of the holiday season being just as good to everyone, and to new adventures in the New Year!
