The mural being painted by artist Melissa Cole at the entrance to the Chewelah Civic Center is well underway! The design is already looking bright and inviting, and we are looking forward to seeing the final result when Melissa's work is complete!

A public hearing is scheduled for this week's meeting of City Council, beginning at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, June 3rd. The City Council will be considering proposed amendments to the City's current Critical Areas Ordinance, which are intended to make development applications cheaper and more time efficient for applicants, in addition to complying with updated state standards.

All members of the public are welcome to attend and provide testimony. The meeting's agenda, which includes the full text of the proposed code amendments, is available on the City's website at this link:

We would like to thank the members of VFW Post 2047, led by Ben and Sally Paramore, who placed flags on the graves and memorials of veterans for Memorial Day this past weekend! We would also like to thank Sety's Ace Hardware for donating flags and Keith Brown for designing the flag holders placed on the niche wall at Chewelah Memorial Park.

Honoring our veterans with this display was a beautiful tribute to their service in defense of our country. This tradition originally began with the Pioneer Cemetery Association, and we are glad to see it continuing every year! We hope that all those who took the opportunity to visit loved ones during the holiday had a chance to appreciate the volunteers' work.

In case you missed it: At last night's meeting of the City Council, Mayor Baxter read a proclamation honoring the late former Chief Troy Anderson, who served with the Chewelah Police Department for over 24 years. City Administrator Wallace also presented a design concept for the skatepark and a central park plaza around the City Municipal Building.

Following this, City Council discussed and adopted a budget amendment ordinance and resolutions adjusting administrative oversight at the Chewelah Municipal Airport. The Council also awarded $5,500 in lodging tax funding to the Chewelah Chamber of Commerce for the upcoming America 250 Celebration.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the meeting!

The Chewelah Police Department has been awarded the Spotlight Hero Award by Homes for Heroes, a nationwide foundation focused on supporting law enforcement, fire, and EMS departments, educators, and veterans.

The award is intended for agencies which go above and beyond in their daily service to their community. In the words of Homes for Heroes Specialist Kathy Colkitt, "Chewelah Police know their community, go out to their community, and support and help all those who come to their office or who they meet out in the community. They're amazing - they go with grace, kindness, love, and serve the community with dignity."

Congratulations to the Chewelah Police Department!

With WSDOT now transitioning to the next phase of their work, daily road closures should halt for the time being. The City will continue to provide any updates we receive going forward.

Today's daily road closure update from the Highway 395 project's traffic controllers:

For today, 5/15/26:
Clay Avenue east of Highway 395 is the only road closed today.

Today we have received a larger update on the status and schedule of the WSDOT Highway 395 Project:

Beginning the night of Sunday, May 17th, crews will be working on islands on the north end of the City. WSDOT is preparing to begin milling roads beginning at Hafer on Wednesday, May 20th. Paving is planned to begin on May 26th and will end around June 5th. The majority of this work will be done at night to minimize disruptions. WSDOT will also be installing message boards to keep the public informed.

Following completion of paving, striping will start at the beginning of July. There is anticipated to be a gap in work between the completion of paving and the beginning of striping. Once striping is complete, the project will be on course to finish its final elements.

The City will continue to forward any updates it receives from WSDOT to ensure our residents are as informed as possible.

The Chewelah RV and Tent Campground is open for the camping season! To make it easier for visitors to reserve spaces at the campground, the City now uses Campspot as a platform for processing reservations and payments. Reservations can be made online (https://www.campspot.com/book/chewalahcitypark) or by calling City Hall at 509-935-8311 (Option 1).

We would ask our park visitors to please be courteous to campers and our campsite spaces - parking is not allowed in the campground without a reservation. We hope visiting campers will enjoy spending time in our City's beautiful park!
