We have the honor of welcoming a very special member of the Cheverly Police Department: Chief Joey Stanger!

Chief Morris awarded 10-year-old Joey with his badge on Wednesday, recognizing his courage and determination. Mayor Micah Watson then swore him in as a member of the Cheverly Police Department.

Joey is battling osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, but the day was a reminder that he doesn’t have to face that fight alone.

His friend, our Lt. Gleason, organized a day filled with public safety demonstrations and a special ceremony at the Prince George's County Special Operations Center, to show Joey how many people are standing in his corner.

We want to thank all of our partners and the many agencies from across the state who came together today, including the Prince George's County Police Department, Maryland State Police, Maryland Park Police, Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Office, Anne Arundel County Sheriff’s Office, and so many more.

No one fights alone. ❤️

🚗🎒 Take the Back-to-School Driver Pledge!
As kids head back to school, let’s all do our part to keep them safe. This school year, make a commitment to:

🛑 Slow down in school zones.
👀 Watch carefully for children walking and biking.
📵 Put the phone down and stay focused on the road.
🚸 Stop for pedestrians.
🚌 Give school buses plenty of space and never pass a stopped bus with flashing red lights.
💛 Be prepared for unexpected moves from young pedestrians and cyclists.

🎒📚 It’s time to go back to school! As kids head back to the classroom this week, take a few minutes to talk about getting there safely.

🚶 Walking? Use sidewalks and crosswalks, look both ways, and stay alert around traffic.
🚌 Riding the bus? Wait safely away from the road and follow the driver’s directions.
🚲 Biking? Wear a properly fitted helmet, follow traffic signals, and use bike lanes or safe routes when available.

A quick conversation today can help make every trip to and from school a safe one. Here’s to a happy and healthy school year! 🏫💙
