“It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced…. that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” —Abraham Lincoln, Gettysburg Address (Bancroft copy).

I make a point of wishing serenity and happiness for people of every faith tradition on their sacred days, and to those with no faith tradition at all, on days of special relevance. The Easter Triduum is dear to me. But it is not a generic well-wish I offer this year. There are plenty of folks who go around trumpeting the name of their Lord and Savior, not in humility but as a whip to compel conformity. Not as a way of increasing their compassion for others, but as a way of making themselves comfortable at the expense of others. So this Easter I remember Him who troubled the mighty. I remember Him who rebuked hypocrites, and seek to root out my own hypocrisies. I remember Him who said that those who hunger and thirst for righteousness shall be satisfied. I remember Him who said blessed are you who mourn, for one day you shall laugh. And I remember Him who was put to death not because anyone in His day cared about the doctrine of Original Sin, but because he troubled the mighty and uplifted the lowly. So in His footsteps I find courage to stand up for those who need protection, rebuke those who inflict harm, guard my heart against becoming hateful like those doing evil supposedly in His name, and proclaim loudly: BELLUM ET ODIUM QUOD VIDEMUS NON VULT.
