As a reminder, the City of Chetopa’s fireworks ordinance allows the discharge of fireworks from June 27th through July 5th between the hours of 8:00 AM and 10:00 PM.
On July 4th only, the hours are extended until 12:00 midnight.
Please be respectful of your neighbors, keep safety in mind, and make sure fireworks are used responsibly. Let’s all do our part to have a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.

What a great turnout today for the 1st Annual CPD Softball Tournament!

For one day, Chetopa set aside the usual disagreements, Facebook debates, and small-town opinions and came together for a really great cause — and that means a lot to us.
We had a great crowd, great teams, lots of laughs, and enough visits to the concession stand to make us think some of y’all may have been there for the nachos just as much as the softball… and honestly, we can’t blame you.

And of course, we can’t forget one of the biggest highlights of the day — our officers taking pies to the face. We’re still not sure how that became a good fundraising strategy, but judging by the crowd’s reaction, it may have been the most popular part of the whole event. Apparently supporting a good cause and watching law enforcement get hit in the face with whipped cream is a winning combination.

Today was a great reminder that no matter what differences people may have, this community knows how to show up when it matters. We are incredibly thankful for every team that played, every volunteer who helped, every person who came out to support, and every one of you who spent your day with us.

Events like today don’t happen without a lot of support, and we truly appreciate this town for showing up the way it did. It was a fun day, a successful day, and a great example of what community looks like.

We’ll be posting totals on Monday along with shout-outs to everyone who helped make today happen.

On June 14, 2026, the Chetopa Police Department received a complaint regarding alleged inappropriate conduct.

Officers immediately began an investigation and gathered statements and evidence related to the complaint.

Based on the information obtained during the investigation, Aaron Clark was charged with two counts of KSA 21-5513, Lewd and Lascivious Behavior. An arrest warrant was subsequently issued.

On June 17, 2026, Clark was located and taken into custody without incident.
As with all criminal cases, all suspects are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

The Chetopa Police Department is excited to announce our Fundraiser Softball Tournament on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the Chetopa Baseball and Softball Fields!
Games kick off at 9:00 AM, and the Championship Game is scheduled for 6:00 PM.

We have several local teams participating, so come out and cheer on your friends, family, coworkers, and maybe even that one person who swears they could've gone pro if it wasn't for their bad knee.

The Chetopa Police Department will have the concession stand open throughout the day, serving up food, drinks, and probably enough snacks to fuel a small army.
All proceeds from the tournament will go directly into the Police Department Equipment Fund to help purchase equipment needed to better serve and protect our community.
Now for the part everyone has been waiting for...

Throughout the day, tickets will be available for purchase for a chance to PIE THE CHIEF IN THE FACE!

That's right. For a small donation, you could earn the opportunity to publicly launch a pie directly at the Chief's face. Some of you have probably been training for this moment your entire lives. Please remember, this is a fundraiser—not a personal vendetta. One pie per winning ticket.

This event isn't just about softball or raising money. It's about bringing our community together, welcoming visitors to town, having some fun, and strengthening the relationships that make Chetopa such a special place to live.
Whether you're coming to play ball, eat a hot dog, laugh at the Chief getting pied, or just spend time with friends and neighbors, we'd love to see you there.

We are aware that several power lines have been affected by falling limbs and storm damage, resulting in power outages in parts of our community. We understand how frustrating it can be to be without electricity, especially during severe weather, and we appreciate everyone's patience.

Please remember that the crews working to restore power are doing so in extremely difficult conditions. They are out in the lightning, wind, and rain, working as quickly and safely as possible to get power restored to everyone affected. These men are putting themselves in challenging and potentially dangerous situations to help our community.

We would also like to remind everyone that this outage is affecting multiple areas, and the utility crews are working through numerous issues at the same time. Many of the workers restoring power are also dealing with outages at their own homes and concerns for their own families, yet they continue to work long hours to serve others.

Instead of harsh words or criticism, we encourage everyone to offer patience, understanding, and a simple "thank you." A few kind words can go a long way and are greatly appreciated by those working tirelessly to restore services.

Please continue to avoid any downed power lines and report them to the appropriate authorities. Never approach or drive over a downed line, as it should always be considered energized and dangerous.

We would like to welcome approximately 430 cyclists who will be riding through our community tomorrow as part of the Bikes Across Kansas event.

The riders are expected to arrive between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. and will be making their way to Veterans Park for a break and lunch before continuing their journey across the state.

We ask all motorists to please use extra caution while traveling through town during these hours. Be alert for cyclists on our roadways, slow down when necessary, and help ensure everyone arrives safely at their destination.

We also encourage our residents to come out and give these visitors a warm Chetopa welcome! Bring your hometown Hornet spirit, wave, cheer them on, and show them what makes our community special. A friendly smile and a few words of encouragement can go a long way for riders who have already logged many miles on their journey.

Let's work together to make their stop in Chetopa a safe, enjoyable, and memorable one.

We are aware of multiple power lines that are currently down throughout the city. City crews are actively working to repair the damage and restore services as quickly and safely as possible.

For your safety, please avoid any downed power lines and the surrounding area. Never assume a power line is safe to approach, even if it appears inactive. If you encounter a downed line, do not drive over it, walk near it, or attempt to move it.

If you discover a power line that has not been reported, please contact the City of Chetopa immediately so the proper crews can respond.

We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation while repairs are being completed. Giving crews plenty of space to work helps ensure they can safely restore power to our community as quickly as possible.

The Chetopa Police Department would like to inform residents that an accident at the intersection of 4th Street and Plum Street resulted in a ruptured natural gas line earlier today.

We are aware of the situation and have been working closely with emergency personnel and utility crews. The gas line has been shut off, and at this time there is no danger to the public. Evacuations are NOT necessary.

However, residents on the east side of town should expect an interruption in natural gas service until repairs can be completed. Utility crews from Atmos Energy are currently on scene and working diligently to restore service as quickly and safely as possible.

For everyone's safety, please avoid the area around 4th and Plum and allow emergency and utility personnel room to work. If you notice the smell of gas in areas outside the affected location or have concerns regarding your service, please contact the appropriate utility provider or emergency services.
We appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation as repairs are being made. We will provide updates as they become available.

CHETOPA POLICE DEPARTMENT IMPORTANT COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENT.
Well folks… we officially have questions.
Not about major crimes. Not about suspicious activity. Not even about why jumpstart pizza tastes better at 1:47 AM.

No… today’s mystery is: “Who stole the flowers?” seriously people!!!

Now we just want to talk. Because out of ALL the things available in this town… somebody looked at a flower bed and said:
“Yep. That’s the score of the century right there.”
Not a catalytic converter. Not a TV. Not even somebody’s grill during tornado season.
Flowers.
Whole criminal operation looked like: “GO GO GO!” “Grab the petunias!” “THE NEIGHBORS ARE WATCHING!” “WE’RE LOSING DAYLIGHT!”
Listen… this isn’t even about the money.

Chetopa is a small town and people here actually care about keeping it looking nice. Those flowers were planted by people trying to make the community beautiful… not start an underground black-market tulip cartel.
So here’s the deal from the Police Department:
Bring the flowers back.

No questions asked.
And honestly? I’ll personally buy you your own bouquet. A REAL bouquet. One that’s handed to you legally and doesn’t require a tactical midnight gardening mission.
You deserve flowers too. You just don’t have to earn them like a raccoon with warrants.
At this point we’re one step away from putting out a BOLO for suspicious individuals traveling with excessive pollen.

Please return the flowers before Officers have to dust begonias for fingerprints and explain that sentence in court paperwork.

Chetopa Police Department Storm Update: We Think We Intimidated the Weather we call that a win.

Well… Mother Nature came in last night talking reckless, acting like she was about to remake Twister… and then delivered pretty much nothing.

Respectfully… that was a weather bluff.
We called it.
Now tonight, we assume she’s coming back trying to restore her reputation.
So yes — the shelter is staying open again tonight.
But honestly? We have a theory.
We’re pretty sure when the storm gets close to Chetopa, it’s going to make a sharp right turn and leave once it realizes we’re ready.
Picture it…
Storm rolls up…

Sees Chetopa residents in the shelter with flashlights, snacks, Stanley cups, weather radios…
…and in the background, The Thunder Rolls starts playing dramatically.
Thunder rolls… and the lightning strikes…
Storm pauses.
Looks around.
Sees we’re prepared.
And just goes:
“Nope. Hard right.”

At this point we believe severe weather hits the county line, hears Garth Brooks in the distance, sees the shelter open, and decides this town has become too emotionally prepared to mess with.
Forecast currently calls for:
60% chance of storms
80% chance Mother Nature is still holding a grudge
100% chance The Thunder Rolls starts playing like a movie soundtrack when radar lights up
Honestly we think the storm sees Chetopa and treats it like a speed trap.
Storm Cell: “Uh… police presence detected.”
Mother Nature: “Take a right. Take a right NOW.”

And if it does turn?
We are absolutely claiming law enforcement presence and classic country music deterred severe weather.
Please do not jinx this by saying:
“It’ll split around us.”
“Storms never hit here.”
“We scared the tornado off.”
That is how you trigger the sequel.
So the shelter remains open because while we fully suspect Mother Nature may roll up, hear The Thunder Rolls, get nervous and hook a sharp right at the city limits… we are not betting public safety on Garth alone.
Stay safe, stay weather aware…
And if the storm turns away while Garth is playing, we will consider that official proof Chetopa collectively bullied a thunderstorm with country music.
