Ramp from County I to southbound US 53 to close in Barron County
Closure necessary for replacement of nearby Chetek River Bridge
The ramp from County I to southbound US 53 south of Chetek is expected to be closed to traffic on Friday, June 19. The closure is expected to be in place until approximately Oct. 1.
During this closure, southbound US 53 traffic will be detoured on northbound US 53 to US 8, where motorists will exit and then re-enter southbound US 53.
Closure of the ramp is necessary for the replacement of the bridge over the Chetek River, which is southeast of the US 53/County I interchange. The bridge project is part of a multiyear effort that started in 2025 rehabilitating five bridges. Work in 2026 includes replacing the Chetek River Bridge and the decks on bridges carrying southbound US 53 over 20th Street and County I.

Please be advised that due to unforeseen circumstances during construction, the closure of the Knapp and 15th Street intersection has been extended by one day. The intersection is now expected to remain closed through Friday, May 8th.

The extension is necessary because an existing sewer manhole on Knapp Street interferes with the new sewer main installation and must be relocated to comply with regulations. The contractor plans to have the intersection reopened to traffic by the weekend.

To facilitate progress on the SCS Development, please be advised of the following upcoming road closures for water and sewer extensions:

- Knapp and 15th Street Intersection: Closed beginning Monday, May 4th. It is expected to reopen on Thursday, May 7th.
- 15th Street (South of Knapp Street): Closed beginning Monday, May 4th, for approximately two to three weeks. A detour through the SCS development will be in place.
Thank you for your understanding.
