We did a little dive training over the weekend at Round Lake near New Auburn. The visibility was quite poor, but it allowed us the opportunity to work on some navigation skills. Part of what we focused on was choosing a visual point at the surface, and trying to swim to it under water using our navigation tools.
The tools we use for this include mechanical compasses that are built into our Zeagle Systems 911 BCD, dive computers, or Apple Watch Ultras (which work as dive computers). Similar to an airplane that navigates with a heading when it's dark out, we use our headings to swim in the right direction.
