Under Indiana law, a legal e-bike must have ๐™›๐™ช๐™ก๐™ก๐™ฎ ๐™ค๐™ฅ๐™š๐™ง๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ž๐™ซ๐™š ๐™ฅ๐™š๐™™๐™–๐™ก๐™จ, ๐™–๐™ฃ ๐™š๐™ก๐™š๐™˜๐™ฉ๐™ง๐™ž๐™˜ ๐™ข๐™ค๐™ฉ๐™ค๐™ง ๐™ค๐™› ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿฑ๐Ÿฌ ๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ฉ๐™ฉ๐™จ ๐™ค๐™ง ๐™ก๐™š๐™จ๐™จ, and travel a max speed of 20 MPH (Class 1 & Class 2), or max speed of 28 MPH(Class 3). Legal e-bikes are treated like bicycles.

That also means e-bike riders must follow the same rules as bicyclists, including obeying traffic signs and signals, riding with traffic, yielding when required, using lights when required, and riding safely around pedestrians and vehicles.

๐ˆ๐Ÿ ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐จ๐ž๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐ฆ๐ž๐ž๐ญ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐š๐ฅ ๐ž-๐›๐ข๐ค๐ž ๐ซ๐ž๐ช๐ฎ๐ข๐ซ๐ž๐ฆ๐ž๐ง๐ญ๐ฌ, ๐ข๐ญ ๐ข๐ฌ ๐ง๐จ๐ญ ๐š ๐ฅ๐ž๐ ๐š๐ฅ ๐ž-๐›๐ข๐ค๐ž. It is considered a motor vehicle, which means it requires a license, registration, and insurance. Motorized vehicles being operated illegally may also be subject to enforcement action, including impoundment.

Please check the label, motor wattage, top speed, and whether the bike has working pedals before allowing your child to ride. Not everything sold online as an โ€œe-bikeโ€ is legally an e-bike.

The Chesterton Police Department is aware of the recent vandalism incident involving the railcars on Grant Street that has been circulating on social media.

We would like to thank the members of our community and the parents who came forward with information and assisted in identifying those involved. Your willingness to speak up and work with law enforcement is greatly appreciated and plays an important role in maintaining the safety and quality of life in our community.

Acts of vandalism and destruction of property are unacceptable at any age and will be addressed appropriately. We encourage parents and guardians to discuss with their children the serious consequences that can result from this type of behavior.

Thank you again to everyone who provided information and continues to support the Chesterton Police Department in keeping our community safe.

Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Dave Virijevich and Corporal Nolan Mancera on receiving the District 1 Law Enforcement Councilโ€™s Officer of the Year Award.

This prestigious recognition was presented on Friday, May 29, during the District 1 Law Enforcement Councilโ€™s Annual Awards Banquet at Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City.

The Officer of the Year Award is reserved for officers who, through an act of exceptional valor, clearly distinguish themselves by bravery, heroism, or outstanding courage, placing the safety and welfare of others above all other considerations.

Lt. Virijevich and Cpl. Mancera were honored for the outstanding courage they displayed during the Chesterton Police Departmentโ€™s officer-involved shooting incident in June 2025. Their actions exemplify the highest standards of professionalism, courage, and dedication to public safety.

The District 1 Law Enforcement Council is made up of police executives from Northwest Indiana agencies who work to promote professionalism, training, and networking among law enforcement leaders while enhancing public awareness of law enforcement and public safety issues.

We are incredibly proud of Lt. Virijevich and Cpl. Mancera and grateful for their continued service to the Chesterton community. Congratulations on this well-deserved honor!

Officers were notified of a baby bird on the ground outside of station after it took a tumble from our sign. Chesterton Officers and the Chesterton Fire department were able to get the baby bird back home safely. Job well done by all officers and firemen involved!

We want to recognize and thank Sgt. Tony Alfaro, better known by the students as Officer Tony, the Liberty Middle School SRO, for the incredible impact he continues to make on the students of the Liberty Campus.

Programs like โ€œHold the Ropeโ€ remind us how important it is for young people to know they are supported, valued, and never alone. Sgt. Alfaro exemplifies what it means to โ€œhold the ropeโ€; building trust, offering encouragement, and being a steady presence for students through both the good days and the difficult ones.
