All local residents are invited to a clothing giveaway from the large stockpile left from the donations to the victims of the apartment fire on West Porter Ave. The relief fund grows. . . CHS football team beats LaPorte 11-7 with a touchdown by Andy Pack, a field goal by Matt McCaleb, and a safety by Todd Basich. . . The 20th annual Duneland Harvest Festival will be held this weekend at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.

A 37-year-old Chesterton man lost his life just before midnight Friday when he rear-ended a semi-truck at the intersection of Ind. 149 and U.S. 20. The suffered a massive skull fracture and severed artery in the neck and was pronounced dead at Porter Memorial Hospital, where he’d been taken by NOPAC ambulance. . . An estimated $371 in damage was done by vandals to the Komaiko residence on C.R. 1300N near Brummitt Road, the Indiana State Police. Five windows were broken, screens and frames damaged, the hose left on to cause seepage in the basement, and damage to flowers. The ISP also investigated the theft of copper wire from ConRail telegraph poles in the Pines area. About 7,000 feet of wire were taken when six wires were removed from 12 poles. . . An estimated $200 damage resulted when the rear window of a car of Simon Buchwalter, 1200 W. Indiana Ave., was broken out. Joseph Mangine, 410 Waverly Road, reported $20 in damage to his lawn and Arcata Microfilm, 808 Wabash Ave., reported $50 in damage to its lawn, done by vehicles being driven over them. Mrs. John Forchetti, 1610 Cobblestone Court, reported an estimated $35 damage when a window was shot out by a pellet gun. . . Three cases of vandalism in Indian Trails were reported to Porter Police. Mrs. Kirgin, 170 Michigami, reported that the liner in her swimming pool was cut and the hose for its pump cut into sections for an estimated loss of $210. Mrs. Lewis Jennell, 512 Strongbow, reported a picture window broken and Mrs. George Dickey, 601 Michigami, reported that her mailbox had been twisted off its post. . . An effort is being made to organize Morgan Park residents into a citizens association. An organizational meeting will be held on Sept. 30 at Thomas Library. The purpose of the organization is to look into the problems of the Morgan Park neighborhood. It is planned to get a representative to attend Chesterton Town Board meetings. . . SEEN & HEARD: Heard—About the turkey that turned up early Friday morning in the yard of the Jack Neale home on Woodland Drive, Dunes Forest. The family was wakened at 6 a.m. by the noisy bird. When the grayish brown hen turkey didn’t go away by afternoon, Neal called Porter Police. They came and captured the runaway (or wild one, maybe) and will keep it at the police station for a few days (or maybe till November?). . . Seen—At Ralph Tomlin’s Chesterton Package Store, a bit of remodeling to accommodate a walk-in cooler. . . Val-Porte Chjapter 193 of Parents Without Partners will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday at the LaPorte American Legion hall. There will be an Indiana folklore program and dancing will follow to a live band. To be eligible to join the organization, one must be a parent by reason of death, divorce, separation, or unmarried. Custody of children is not a factor. . . The We-Kan-Do nation of Indian Guides at the Westchester YMCA will hold its annual roundup on Tuesday and Wednesday at Yost Elementary School. Some of the events planned are a fall campout, a family harvest moon banquet, and a Christmas party. . . The North Porter County Garden Club will present a standard mini flower show on Saturday at Thomas Library. Club members working on the show are Mrs. Aery Pratt, Mrs. Wetzel, Mrs. Krewett, Mrs. Thomas Duggan, Mrs. Herbert Bauer, Mrs. Edward Anderson, and Mrs. Richard Wynder. . . Attention coaches: The CHS Sports Desk opens at 7 a.m. to get calls for results of games and meets. The desk is open for girls athletics as well as boys. . . It’s back to the drawing board for the CHS football, after the Trojans were beaten 21-0 score-wise and pretty badly physically beaten by a big, rough, hungry Hobart team in the Brickie Bowl last Friday night. .
