pilots from across the Commonwealth gathered at Wi******er Regional Airport on Saturday, June 13th for instruction and flight evaluations of mountain flying. Each pilot flew with a mountain-flying-qualified mission check pilot to become certified. The course covered key topics surrounding the mountain terrain such as crossing mountain ridges, canyon turns, density altitude, hypoxia, changing weather conditions and more. Virginia Wing operates 13 aircraft and supports missions upon request, primarily search and rescue for downed aircraft or missing persons. In addition, it has provided imagery of key areas before and after hurricanes and tropical storms to state and federal agencies.

✈️ From hands-on STEM activities to event support and emergency services demonstrations, Virginia Wing Civil Air Patrol members made a strong impact at the 2026 Home Educators Association of Virginia Convention in Richmond.

Cadets and senior members from across the Commonwealth worked together to assist event operations, showcase aerospace education opportunities, demonstrate emergency services capabilities, and inspire students through interactive flight simulators, model rockets, and engineering activities.

Through service, leadership, and education, Virginia Wing continues to help the next generation discover opportunities in aviation, STEM, and public service.

🎉 What a night for the Wi******er Composite Squadron! 🎉

At the squadron’s recent awards ceremony, members celebrated an incredible year, including the unit’s recognition as both a Virginia Wing Squadron of Merit (2025) and a Mid-Atlantic Region Squadron of Merit (2025). The evening also honored more than 40 cadet promotions, a series of Wing-level awards, and several outstanding individual achievements.

STEM Flights was also recognized at both the Virginia Wing and Mid-Atlantic Region levels with the 2025 Frank G. Brewer Civil Air Patrol Memorial Aerospace Award in the non-Civil Air Patrol organization category.

One of the evening's proudest moments: Cadet Lt Col Sarah Modersohn was presented the General Ira C. Eaker Award, one of the most demanding milestones a cadet can earn, presented by Assistant Secretary of the Air Force, Hon. Richard Anderson. Congratulations, Cadet Modersohn!

The Virginia Wing extends its congratulations to every cadet, senior member, family member, and guest who helped make this night possible. The strength of the Wi******er Composite Squadron is its people—especially its volunteers!

✈️ Civil Air Patrol Takes Flight with Army Aviation Leadership 🚁

Civil Air Patrol pilot Lt. Col. William Benner recently had the honor of flying U.S. Army Lieutenant General David J. Francis—the Army’s second most senior aviator—on a familiarization flight over Fort Eustis. The flight marked a full-circle milestone for LTG Francis, who originally launched his aviation career as a Civil Air Patrol Cadet before going on to amass more than 3,000 rotary-wing hours.

This enduring partnership is invaluable to enhancing aerospace education across the Hampton Roads area and directly supporting the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Program. Designed for youth aged 12 to 20, the CAP Cadet Program transforms young people into dynamic leaders through a curriculum focused on leadership, physical fitness, character development, and aviation.

Collaborating with the active-duty Army at Fort Eustis provides Cadets with unmatched, hands-on experiences. From navigating military Leadership Reaction Courses and obstacle courses, to touring advanced aviation maintenance facilities and training in state-of-the-art simulators, this partnership bridges the gap between classroom aerospace education and real-world military operations. Crucially, it exposes the next generation of aerospace leaders to the diverse and rewarding career pathways available within Army Aviation.

Two local Chesapeake cadets have achieved top honors by being selected for prestigious medals from the Staff Sergeant Jonathan Kilian Dozier Memorial Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2894. C/CMSgt Russel McCracken and C/Capt Michael Hogwood were selected as The VFW Civil Air Patrol Cadet NCO and Officer of the Year, respectively.

This VFW Award program is designed to provide special recognition for exceptional leadership, academic excellence, and outstanding personal achievement within regional high school Junior ROTC, Civil Air Patrol, and Naval Sea Cadet units. This year, these local cadets distinguished themselves among their peers through rigorous service, commitment to their communities, and an exemplary display of esprit de corps. By earning these highly regarded VFW medals and certificates, both honorees embody the core values of service and excellence championed by Chesapeake's veteran community.

Sunday evening, Burke Composite Squadron mobilized to track down an active Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) in the Prince William area. The squadron provided Ground Team and Urban Direction Finding support, located the ELT, and assisted the owner with deactivating the device. Top marks to the team for answering the call!

That's a wrap on the 2026 Virginia Wing Cadet Competition! Top marks to all squadrons that participated. The competition included several elements to include a written exam, evaluation on drill, evaluation on posting the colors, uniform inspections, and more. A big thank you to event staff, which included active duty airmen and guardians. And congratulations to Burke Composite Squadron for taking 1st place!
