The beloved St. Louis Carousel fortunately survived this fire. Howard Ohlendorf purchased it in 1965, two years after the fire, and donated it to St. Louis County. It began operating at Sylvan Springs County Park in 1967, offered rides during the summers through 1979, was restored, and has been at Faust Park since 1987.

Who was Rose? Rose Virginia Hesemann, second from the right in the top row in the first photo, was in the eighth grade graduating class of the Alt School - now preserved in Faust's Historic Village - of 1931. Born in 1918 as the fourth and youngest child of William J. and Louise (Boedecker) Hesemann, Rose grew up on a farm in Ellisville and was clearly grateful for the friends she made and things she learned while a student at Alt. She remained a resident of St. Louis County, married a gentleman with the surname "Koch," and passed away on March 25, 2007, at the age of 89 in Ballwin, Missouri.

So...guess who's here at Faust Park doing some great work? The St. Louis County Parks Grading Crew. And guess what they're doing? Remember when Faust staff and volunteers dismantled and transported the Hackmann and Clester cabins from Creve Coeur's Conway Park to Faust for preservation? The Clester cabin is close to being completely re-erected and preserved, and the foundation for the Hackmann cabin is being prepared on a site between the Hoch and Conway houses in Faust's Historic Village. Historic preservation really does come alive at Faust - sometimes with the assistance of backhoes!
