Virtual Author Talks this month:

You've got options this September with four excellent authors. Choose between talks on America's democracy past and present, a Pulitzer-winner's new sci-fi epic, a facilitator guru's latest guide on useful conflict, and a GRAMMY-winning musician's new picture book told in English and Spanish.

Watch award-winning historian David O. Stewart (Impeached and The Summer of 1787) speak on the American founders' vision for democracy and how we can stay aligned with their intent.

Don't miss Pulitzer Prize-winning author Daniel Kraus (Whalefall and Angel Down) as he delves into his new book The Sixth Nik, a science fiction epic.

Master facilitator and strategic advisor Priya Parker (The Art of Gathering) will speak on her new book The Art of Fighting, in which she posits that conflict is what drives us and shouldn't be feared.

Lastly, have the whole family watch Lucky Diaz, the GRAMMY award-winning musician and author, give two talks on his newest picture book, The Paletero Man, first in English then in Spanish.

You can also look forward to next month’s talks with a dystopian icon, a Smithsonian curator, and a science writer.

Quick reminder that today, September 4th, is the monthly staff development morning. On the first Fridays of the month, the library opens at 12pm rather than 10am so that staff can cross-train and learn new skills. We'll see folks at noon!

Whiting Library is excited to be working with Neighborhood Connections for an informational drop-in session on August 13th at 3:30 PM at the library. Trained staff will assist with filling out social services application forms and can answer questions about all the varieties of support the organization provides for older adults in Chester, Andover, and surrounding areas.

Whether you're looking for help getting to a doctor's appointment, are stuck trying to fill out a SNAP application, want to build up your bones via wellness classes, or are just searching for a warm and comfortable place to have a community meal, Neighborhood Connections has got you covered. Those are only scratching the surface of what the organization provides to their communities.

Calling all Fairies, Elves & Imps! Fire up your imaginations by creating your own Fairy Village in the backyard of Whiting Library on Wednesday, August 5 from 1-2PM.

As much as you can, please bring your own building supplies (or some to share!). While The Nature Museum will bring along SOME items, it helps to have folks can bring their own. Supplies should be natural (non-plastic, etc), native (no invasives!!), and preferably have died naturally, unless garden weeding helped the process along.

Good examples include: pinecones, bark, seeds, leaves, acorns, sticks, shells, dried flowers, rocks...Fairies love these! Fairies do NOT like: tinfoil, glue, popsicle sticks, glitter, or the like.

This is designed to be an hour-long program! Lots of building time is involved so that folks do not feel rushed, but rather can truly get into the whimsy. Fairy Houses will stay at the library outdoor space to increase fairy housing opportunities (aka, will not be built to go home).

And speaking of whimsy...please feel free to come in fairy costume!

This program is rain or shine! In the event of super bad weather, there will be a tarp we will build on indoors, and those fairy homes can travel home afterwards.

We're so excited to announce two new adult programs happening weekly in the Suzy Forlie Reading Room! Starting the week of July 28th, please join us for sessions of Silent Book Club and Shut Up & Write!.

Silent Book Club is a book club with no assigned reading and no pressure. It's BYOB (bring/borrow your own book) with some time to chat at the beginning and end, and an hour of quiet reading time in the middle. We'll host two sessions per week at two different time slots to suit different kinds of schedules. All meeting are drop-in, so you can come and go as you please. First up are Tuesdays from 4pm to 5:30pm, with the second sessions on Fridays from 1pm to 2:30pm.

Shut Up & Write! is a writing group with a simple and proven methodology: show up, sit down, and get words on the page. There's no critiques, no sharing your work, just focused time surrounded by other writers. Feel free to bring a laptop, a notebook, or nothing at all! Extra pencils, pens, and paper will be supplied. The weekly session is held on Fridays from 3:30pm to 5pm.
