Good Morning! We have had several requests for the video from Friday’s graduation ceremony, so we are sharing.

Day 4! These young ladies have definitely worked hard in the heat this week. Today they learned about advancing hand lines and flowing water, forcible entry to gain access, and lots of search and rescue in confined spaces. Working together as a team to get the job done and learning to help each other. Courage. Confidence. Character. Tonight they are having a firehouse sleepover including dinner with the firefighters! Spaghetti is on the menu!

Day 3! The girls started with stretching their muscles and safety talks for the big day. They learned about vehicle extrication and the tools they needed for the job (and how to work with all that gear). Then up they went on the ladder, some of them even surprised themselves with how brave they were. Lunch! Deputy fire Marshal Gibbs and ATF K9 Cinco showed off what Cinco could do and how many kisses Cinco can share. Then back to work with ropes and knots for a short flight.

Camp Fury Day 2 is in the books! Kicked off the day with PT, then a visit with Nightingale, the Kelleher Challenge Course, and fire engine rides with Engine 13. The crew at Station 13 made lunch for the campers today. This afternoon the ladies spent some time with some of Chesapeake Police’s finest on their obstacle course, learning self defense, and shooting paint rounds at targets.

Today we kicked off Camp Fury 2022! Girl Scouts Council of Colonial Coast, Chesapeake CERT, and Chesapeake Fire Department spent the day team building with the weirdest things they had in common, Squad 4 was voted the winner by Fire Chief Elliott for the love of cold Italian toast (pizza for breakfast). They had PT, including planks and burpees, no one voted that as their favorite part of the day. They were fitted for the PPE that they will be using this week. Took a tour of the CFD warehouse, learned about breathing apparatus, turnout gear, and learning the CPAT test that all applicants complete. Finished their day with live fire and extinguisher training. And finally some water fun with a Bucket Brigade before cleaning up and getting ready for day 2!

Thirteen women joined the ranks of the FDNY last week, bringing the total number of female firefighters to the highest number in the department’s 157-year history on International Women’s Day.

The 13 newbies were acknowledged by acting Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh, the department’s first female commissioner, who noted that they would become “role models” for all future generations.

“I want to say to you 13, today you’ve accomplished more than just completing a tough curriculum,” said Kavanagh. “You have become role models and heroes for a generation of women and anyone who thought they could not have a place at the table.”

With the 13 new graduates, the FDNY’s total number of female firefighters was brought to 134 – accounting for a little more than 1% of the department's more than 10,000 firefighters.

According to the FDNY, the first Pakistani woman to ever join the department, Aisha Loane, was also among Tuesday’s graduating class.

The women were a part of a graduating class of 291 probationary firefighters who will now go on to join firehouses throughout the city, where they will gain field experience alongside senior firefighters and officials.
