Social Media Comment Policy

The purpose of all City of Chesapeake social media pages is to provide information to the public. The City of Chesapeake encourages comments and sharing of information directly related to the topics in posts. In order to serve the public interests of decorum and order, the following types of comments will be hidden from all of the City’s social media pages:

Off topic

from the associated post;

Comments or content that promote, foster, or perpetuate discrimination on the basis of
race, age, religion, gender, marital status, national origin, physical or intellectual disability,
sexual orientation, veteran status or any other legally protected class;

Spam or advertisements; and links to other Pages or websites, except for other City of
Chesapeake social media pages;

Promote illegal activity;

Promote or oppose a political candidate, political organization or ballot initiative;

Personal attacks against one or more named individuals;

Personal, medical, or financial information that would jeopardize the safety or privacy of
any person;

Violent, obscene, or profane comments or content;

Repeated identical comments;

Threaten any person or organization;

Information that may compromise the safety, security, or proceedings of public systems or
any criminal or civil investigations. To manage City staff resources (your tax dollars), comments and postings are periodically monitored during regular business hours. The City’s social media pages are not monitored for Virginia Freedom of Information Act requests. Requests to inspect or copy public records under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act must be made to the appropriate FOIA Officer. To create an official service request, call the Chesapeake Customer Contact Center at 757-382-2489 or visit www.CityOfChesapeake.net/Requests. The comments expressed on the City of Chesapeake’s social media pages do not reflect the opinions and position of the City of Chesapeake, Chesapeake City Council, or its officers and employees. The Dual Primary Election will be held on Tuesday, August 4. Please note that there is no election on June 16. Early in-person voting will start at the Voter Registrar’s Office, 411 Cedar Rd, on June 18. Early voting takes place weekdays from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., excluding June 19 and July 3 due to holidays. The last day to apply to vote by mail and to register to vote for this election is July 24. City Council will meet on Tuesday, June 16, at City Hall (306 Cedar Rd). There will be a Work Session at 4:45 p.m. followed by the regular City Council Meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Speaker cards will be accepted for the Council Meeting up until 6:30 p.m. Citizens who wish to speak may register on the date of the meeting in the City Council Chambers before 6:30 p.m. or pre-register by calling the City Clerk’s Office at 757-382-6151 (Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.).

In observance of the upcoming Juneteenth holiday, all City offices, courts, Chesapeake Public Library locations, Chesapeake Animal Services, and Chesapeake Parks, Recreation and Tourism community centers will be CLOSED on Friday, June 19. The Visitor Center will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. There will be no change to the trash collection schedule. Normal operating schedules will resume on Monday, June 22.

REMINDER: Chesapeake Mosquito Control Commission (CMCC) is hosting a Tire Amnesty Drive TOMORROW, June 11, from 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Chesapeake Mosquito Control (1611 Shell Road).

A valid driver’s license to confirm Chesapeake residency is required and drivers must remain in vehicles unless directed by staff, who will remove all tires. Accepted items include passenger vehicle tires only (cars, SUVs, and light trucks). Tires with rims, large off-road or agricultural tires, tractor-trailer tires, and commercial tires will not be accepted. A limit of five tires per resident applies and may be reduced if capacity is reached. No dumping is allowed outside of event hours.
