Chesapeake Environmental Improvement Council - CEIC Join Good People Doing Great Things About the CEIC: Eighteen volunteers are appointed by the Mayor to serve on the governing board. We welcome your comments.

The purpose of the CEIC shall be to promote interest in improving the environment of Chesapeake, Virginia, thereby making Chesapeake a greener, cleaner and healthier city in which to live, work, and visit. The CEIC will accomplish its purpose through outreach, education, and volunteer efforts, to include litter and pollution prevention, waste reduction and recycling, beautification, conservation l

andscaping, and other environmental and conservation issues. However, thousands of other volunteers are actively involved in CEIC projects and sub-committees. Visitors are welcome to attend CEIC monthly meetings. Meetings are held at the River Crest Community Center on the fourth Wednesday of each month at 12 noon. Currently, meetings are held electronically and in accordance with Amended Ordinance adopted by Chesapeake City Council on April 28, 2020, to effectuate temporary changes in certain deadlines and to modify public meeting and public hearing practices and procedures to address continuity of operations associated with pandemic disaster. It’s Zero Waste Awareness Week! You don’t have to be “zero waste” to make a difference.
Maybe this week you used a reusable bottle, rescued leftovers from the refrigerator, recycled more carefully, repaired something, or simply thought twice before making a purchase. It all counts!

It’s Zero Waste Awareness Week! Recycling only works when we recycle right. Putting something in the recycling bin doesn’t automatically make it recyclable. “Wish-cycling”—tossing something in and hoping it can be recycled - contaminates the recycling stream.
Today’s challenge: Take a minute today to review your local recycling guidelines before putting something in the bin.

As part of EcoFest at the Russell Memorial Libary on Saturday 9/12, there will be a screening of the film "We're All Plastic People Now" at 1 pm. Learn about the impact of plastic pollution on human health.

It’s Zero Waste Awareness Week! Food waste is still waste.
Before your next grocery trip, take a look in the refrigerator and pantry. Plan around what you already have, use leftovers, and freeze food before it goes bad. Consider composting so food scraps become a resource, not a waste.
Today’s challenge: Eat something you already have before buying something new.
